Okay, I guess this is now the "Anything Related To Film Study" thread!
Enjoy!

Hello!
I have a few questions about film distribution, but not sure who to ask.
After some googling and wiki-ing, I'm still a bit confused.
So I thought I'd try my luck here.

So does anyone know any companies that buy films?
Like a distribution company.
Especially foreign films?

*EDIT*
Here's the trailer:

or

Thanks!

I'm a freshman who's majoring in Film. In fact, I'm thinking of writing a Korean screenplay and I really plan to give it too some Korean company ^__^

Anyone know how? o_O
Sweevil
Oooh, what school do you go to?
I'm actually looking for an American company.
rainbow_romance
I'm from Canada. LoL...

Try imdb.

yeah i'm a film major i guess... but what do you mean buy films? like a finished film? a documentary? a narrative film? an idea for a film?
with finished films, it's hard because production companies don't usually buy films from individual filmmakers... you can send them a copy and they decide if they like it or not, but even then chances of them looking at it is pretty slim (unless you're a well-known filmmaker, in which case they should be the ones contacting you about doing projects)... and they might buy it and later develop the idea but not the film itself, you know what i mean?
most filmmakers, in order to get their films known, submit their films to festivals and try to get it screened, so production companies who are interested can purchase rights to distribute them...
foreign films, in particular, don't fare well with most production companies in the u.s., which is why they usually go the festival circuit as otherwise it's hard to get their stuff seen...
unless you have some high-ranked connections in the business, i'd say submit your film to festivals and hope it gets screened...
i'm not trying to discourage you, that's just the way the industry does things... and it's different with pitches, you need to get appointments with studio people (there are sites where you can look 'em up but i don't have the list with me right now) and pitch your idea to them... screenplays are the same way, more or less...
Sweevil
Thanks for the info.
Well, I'm actually asking for my dad.
His film will be playing in China this January / February.
And he's entering major film festivals as well.
It's just that his production company has never entered the U.S. market.
So they don't know who to contact.
I tried to look up film distribution companies on wikipedia.
But the list is soo long, I have no idea which ones are solid, you know what I mean.
I guess I just need to know the name of a couple major ones that'd buy foreign films and their contact numbers.
X)

Here is the list I found:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Motio...re_Distributors

losborrachos
well if it's solid material and you wanna look for distributors, the big ones are, off the top of my head, mgm, united artists, universal, columbia, twentieth century fox, warner bros., buena vista, and allied... so they have like major, major scale of distribution...
but it's good that he's submitting it to major film festivals, that's seriously the best way to get noticed for foreign films...
Sweevil
Thanks! I really appriciate your help. I'll look into it.
=)
rahrah
your best bet is probably capitol films or tartan films (tartan asia extreme)

both are UK film distributors that also have distribution setup in the US. both are foreign films, arthouse specialists and quite well known among independents.

wow ur dad was the director for that movie? the trailer looks good...

yeah i highly recommend tartan films USA. they are asian movie specialists... although it would be way more difficult to get them interested unless they met u guys at a film festival i imagine...

u and i are kinda in the same boat~i dont know too much but im guessing you have to do some research and find some companies and send them scripts to the right person
u also probably need connections

thats why im planning on spending a year in korea to get a better grasp~but i dont think ill get any film credits there so i might have to be a super senior after -___-"

haha yeah i guess we're all in the same boat... it'd be awesome to work in japan, korea or hong kong since i do think they make some of the best movies around but it's hard cos we need 1) connections 2) language proficiency 3) a whole lot of money to spend before you start making money 4) connections... i think i'm heading towards the super senior route as well, since i end up working on shoots and not taking the classes i actually need to take if i wanna graduate... sad...

hmm maybe we should make this a film major thread? let's start with the question: what do you wanna do in film? direct? produce? dp? edit? gaffer? (what? some gaffers make a good living)

also adding another question: what film school are u going to?

i go to chapman which i HEARD (so not 100% sure) is tied for #1 film school in US with usc...or something like that
im undeclared but i entered in thinking i would go film production but then im now thinking about going into screen writing...STILL havent decided~
if i dont do screen writing i want to direct~but everyone wants to direct hahahahahaha

its hard being a film student in cali (im from oregon when all i had to say i was a film student and eveyrone would be impressed) T.T i swear EVERYONE is a film student and im like the only one with practically nothing in my portfolio

i think im gonna like this thread~hahahah
losborrachos
ok i can't post (and never have posted) what school i go to here cos ppl are pretty anal abt checking what students post on the internet and i can get into trouble for half of the stuff i write on soompi... but it's outside of cali (inorite once i decided to major in film i avoided cali like the plague... oh, and there's also the fact that everyone was saying i should go to cali and i wanted to piss everyone off as always)... my school's not the best in film (the animation dept. kicks our butt every year) but i know it's one of the ccrfa schools so it's gotta be somewhat recognized (of course chapman won last year so yay to you, pikapika) and sundance is a huge deal here cos, well, it's close... that should narrow it down a lot...

the annoying thing is that here we had to apply to get into the major (basically you have to submit a ton of essays and a sample of your work which i guess is how most film schools work) so it was already a pain in the arse to get in... then once we get into the major there's like this huge hierarchy thing going on... like the first year you're in the major you're basically a lowlife and you can't work on productions as anything else but pa... i understand it's how it works in the industry as well but this is where some of the seniors get all cocky and whatnot when we're all still students.. well i wouldn't even dream of switching majors so i guess i just have to suck it up... so tell me if it's the same in other film schools...

and to answer my own question, i wanna go into art direction/production design cos i fell in love with it in intro to film (initially i was going into producing), so i'm taking a bunch of theatre classes right now since lame film department doesn't offer any basic design classes (and art direction isn't even a track/emphasis)... it's unfair since we have a whole lot of directing classes, but then again yeah everyone wants to direct...

what other stuff can we talk abt? well, if i had to pick one, my favorite director of all time is probably akira kurosawa (art direction-wise you can't go wrong with a kurosawa film... the man was an artist before he was a filmmaker)...
pikapika
hahaha i have a feelings it just gonna be you and me~hahahahaha

u have to apply for the major here too~probably the biggest reason why im not declared~but u can still take some basic film classes that u need anyways which is what im doing now~i really need to get to applying ><

chapman is pretty nice in that freshman can also get a camera but i think it stops there...hahaha but it makes sense~the upper division students should be able to use the other equipment~so far i havent met any cocky seniors because at this point they need us underclassmen, we're basically free labor...haha

my favorite director? miyazaki? i love watching animation movies because u can achieve so much more and there's hardly any limitations~i know i should be watching more movies but frankly im a difficult movie pleaser~movies for me are for pure entertainment so i cant stand to watch those seriouse thinking films...which is what everyone watches at this school -__-"
but ive heard of akira kurosawa i think~i believe im going to watch one of his films soon in my 5 hour film history class (i HATE this class but its required T.T)

so what's your ultimate goal?
mine is to get my degree here and then rock the korean industry. i totally believe that Korea has definite potential to spread the hallyu wave worldwide, even to western audiences and i want to be part of that~im thinking that an american film degree will give me a slight edge above others but *sigh* i am seriously lacking in connections...lacking as in i have NONE...this is why i want to korea and suck up to WHOEVER and get noticed

but its a big dream~^.^ and a hard one to achieve...i suppose i could work here in the states~i do have connections here..

yea i know what you mean... i have a 3 hour film history class where we just watch french new wave stuff and omg i fall asleep every time... but they're showing rashomon next wk i'm so excited! i'm actually quite surprised that i really get into his films since i'm usually into crowd-pleaser stuff as well... but i can safely say that being a film major and taking all those painful compulsory theory classes will make you appreciate the boring classics a little bit more... and i'm jealous btw cos here everyone's raving abt epic movie and whatnot and i don't wanna be a film snob but epic movie? really?

wtf we ARE in the same boat! yes once i graduate my dream is to work in east asia, either korea which is my absolute ideal industry, hong kong (wong kar wai wub.gif), or japan... or maybe all three and be like chris doyle except female and art director and not a total jerk... i know i have more connections in hollywood than i do in asia which is uber-sad since i'm ASIAN (like from asia)... so i was planning the same thing... go to korea, schmooze to whoever and be a lowlife pa if i have to (i guess this is why college is impt.) and try to move up the ladder... you know maybe we should join forces and double the schmooze power...

and yeah i think we're the only ones... man with so many kdrama/kmovie addicts here you'd think there'd be more film majors...

LETS BE FRIENDS AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER TO ACHIEVE OUR SIMILAR AND DISGUSTINGLY DIFFICULT DREAMS

hahahaha~my name is aj btw~ah im also watching rashomon soon...and i have to say...it reminds me of digimon...thats how much i know about films...hahahaha
epic movie as in the parody by some of the writers of scary movie? hahaha i want to watch it~i watched date movie and i was more interested in how they connected all the parodies together...i love parodies...i think epic movie would be even harder since the movies they're using are located in different worlds practically~i just hope its not something stupid

i also thought about going to Japan and see how i do there because i'm also minoring in japanese...at this point im thinking about spending a semester in japan (to get my japanese credits) AND a year in korea but i dont think thats going to work out if i want to graduate withint three years. i hate how its so limiting for film students internationally...you would think they would try to encourage more international reaching since media is a global industry but whatever...><

i have been trying to do some things to get me more connected~like im trying to figure out how i could send my story to the right people to work on it >< i wish my professors would be more helpful but as great as they are~they're not exactly international~

yay for uberly unachievable dreams! haha i'm nin... your profs will probably tell you this but i guess rashomon was revolutionary in its narrative structure (as in the unreliable narrator), the use of light, the cinematography (kazuo miyagawa -> v. respectable dp... apparently this movie is the first incident where they point the camera at the sun), and just the silent-film quality in general... personally i like seven samurai better but i'm still excited that they're showing it cos a lot of my film buddies have't seen it and man they're missing out... on epic movie, well, i'm not saying crowd-pleasers like this are bad, but you need to balance it out... this is the year of good movies (babel, pan's labyrinth, iwo jima) so it kinda saddens me that no one here is gonna see those amazing movies because they're rated R and all they're seeing are epic movie and norbit...

and i so get what you're saying about professors... i've talked to some of them about getting me jobs and internships and it usually goes

yeah it makes me sad when ppl wanna become an artist or a singer or a filmmaker but then they end up studying engineering or business or premed (there's absolutely wrong with these fields if you really love them, but most of my friends who are in those majors actually wanna studdy something else)... it's like, what are you afraid of? me, i'm more scared of being trapped in a cubicle and working a 9-to-5 job hating my life than anything else in the world...

the thing is, there's this misconception (esp. among asians) that film is not a lucrative business... that it's hard to find a job blah blah... ppl think you're either the next scorsese or you starve... when actually, as i've said before, i know ppl who make a good living being gaffers, or scenic designers, or even a smaller-scale director...

anyways as for the GOOD movies that are coming out~well its not problem at my school...they screen those movies here at chapman so everyone goes sees them...i think this wednesday they're screening "amazing grace" which i heard is supposed to be really good...i might go see it if im not too tired that night (i have a full load of classes on wednesday + work)

yeah here most ppl don't watch R-rated films for religious reasons... it's not forbidden or anything it's just personal choice i guess... except film majors, film majors see everything (and i guess justify it saying that it's for educational purposes, which is true)... and i've been hearing some good things abt "amazing grace" too... well except i've been hearing them from the president of walden media who just came to our school to talk to the film ppl and he might be a little bit biased since it's his studio's film, after all...

haha yeah i was gonna go into business i think but i took econs in high school and i thought, "wait, if i do this i'll be stuck in office all day, doing THIS?" and i was out... that's what i love abt studying film too, that you're surrounded by ppl who are similarly office-phobic and you just hang out and be creative all day together... except that film is actually one of the most stressful fields to be in (my professor always says, "if you can't handle high levels of stress, don't be a filmmaker... go study accounting or law or something")

*sigh* it's even worse back home cos ppl have this misconception that studying film -> you wanna be an actor/actress (in the celebrity, famous person sense of the word)... it's like i had to tell all my uncles and aunts that i do NOT wanna BE in films i wanna MAKE them, sheesh...
but i can totally relate on the parents thing... my dad was totally pushing me to go into producing cos he thinks it's the only job in film where you make money, and when i said art director he's like "omg here she goes again with the art thing"... i also made an agreement that i was gonna get an mba after i'm done w/ film school, i'm still trying to figure out how to get out of that one, but i think he's starting to realize that film offers a lot of opportunities and i once brought up the idea of working in korea/japan and he seemed ok with it, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed... i think my mom is just mostly worried because she thinks me being a filmmaker would be in conflict with me having a family in the future but i mean, mom, i've never even had a serious relationship yet, come on...

but the weird thing is, i would be telling them abt this new japanese/korean movie that totally rocks etc etc and they'll go "uhm, really? i don't really like japanese/korean movies... pirates of the caribbean and cars are my favorite movies" and i go blink.gif well as far as connections go i don't know if they have any (or if they even need any since they wanna work here in the us anyways)...
no kidding o.0 im like "i love miyazaki!" or "i just watched curse of golden flower" (I WANTED MY MONEY BACK BTW...what a horrible movie...i was so disapointed >< the beginning started off well but near the end i was just like "POINTLESS") and theyre like "thats nice...PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN" they want to talk about american movies when i want to talk about asian movies...that happened when i went to japan for a summer as exchange student...when we went to watch a movie i got voted down and we ended up watching star wars...i was like -__-

QUOTE
yeah here most ppl don't watch R-rated films for religious reasons... it's not forbidden or anything it's just personal choice i guess... except film majors, film majors see everything (and i guess justify it saying that it's for educational purposes, which is true)... and i've been hearing some good things abt "amazing grace" too... well except i've been hearing them from the president of walden media who just came to our school to talk to the film ppl and he might be a little bit biased since it's his studio's film, after all...

im guessing u go to a religious school? is it conservative? a lot of the movies we watch here are rated R and sometimes i wish they werent...in class im usually like "oi!" and covering my eyes...but im kinda conservative and consider myself innocent (hahahahahahahaha)

QUOTE
haha yeah i was gonna go into business i think but i took econs in high school and i thought, "wait, if i do this i'll be stuck in office all day, doing THIS?" and i was out... that's what i love abt studying film too, that you're surrounded by ppl who are similarly office-phobic and you just hang out and be creative all day together... except that film is actually one of the most stressful fields to be in (my professor always says, "if you can't handle high levels of stress, don't be a filmmaker... go study accounting or law or something")
no kidding~film school is stressful as it is and im not even officially in it! >< but yeah we get the weirdest kids in film school tho...if u go around my school u can usually pick out the film students...but it is fun to be around creative people...back in high school i would always be the wanting to try new things and what not and most people would be like "eh...." but here theyre even crazier than me hahahaha

QUOTE
*sigh* it's even worse back home cos ppl have this misconception that studying film -> you wanna be an actor/actress (in the celebrity, famous person sense of the word)... it's like i had to tell all my uncles and aunts that i do NOT wanna BE in films i wanna MAKE them, sheesh...
but i can totally relate on the parents thing... my dad was totally pushing me to go into producing cos he thinks it's the only job in film where you make money, and when i said art director he's like "omg here she goes again with the art thing"... i also made an agreement that i was gonna get an mba after i'm done w/ film school, i'm still trying to figure out how to get out of that one, but i think he's starting to realize that film offers a lot of opportunities and i once brought up the idea of working in korea/japan and he seemed ok with it, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed... i think my mom is just mostly worried because she thinks me being a filmmaker would be in conflict with me having a family in the future but i mean, mom, i've never even had a serious relationship yet, come on...

ah i know how u feel...when i was back in home for winter break and told them i was majoring into film more than half the people were like "you're going to act?" and yes i would always answer "no i dont want to be in front of the camera, i want to be behind the camera"
*sigh* i dont even want to think about graduate school...im deserpately hoping that within the next three years i get discovered and i dont have to worry about that...im going to be in debt foreeeevvvveeer~and i hate school~im just not a school person (i say this while i have tons of hw waiting for me -__-")

hmm curse of the golden flower is not that good huh? shame i love zhang yimou i think he needs to get back to serious angst-y drama a la raise the red lantern and ju dou... i DLed golden flower but it was such bad quality i still haven't seen it... maybe i should just delete it and make space for other films... and omg if i were in japan i'd watch all the cool japanese movies by myself, except they prob'ly don't have subs which might make it kinda difficult...

yeah, it's largely church-sponsored and it's pretty conservative... it drives me nuts sometimes cos they'll be showing the shining in class (the clip doesn't even contain R-rated material) and ppl (generally non-film majors who're just taking the class) would just walk out... and i'm like "guys, there's nothing R in the clip! the only thing it has is amazing cinematography!"

so when do you think you're gonna declare or apply into the major?

oh it was beautifully shot but there was some cg in it that was kind of disapointing...it was the plot that really got me...sleep.gif" it was utterly pointless my friends and i were in shock at the ending..i wouldnt even call it an ending...man just thinking about it makes me mad...i spent almost $9 to watch that movie
i was also hoping for some more martial arts scene and that was disapointing too (tho i have to admit...one of the fews ones that i had was shot beautifully)

i think some conservative people forget that its rated r and what not because it depicts real life (well im not sure about the shining but still...)and real life aint pretty thats for sure...sometimes i think if movies toned down their content it would actually hurt the movie...but then again some movies im just like *covers eyes*

soon hopefully~i have to go pick up the application this thursday when i have film class and then work on those dumb essays and put together something that looks like a portfolio T.T i also have to look into going abroad but i REALLY really want to be able to take some film classes abroad...how cool would that be? still gotta ask around

i was thinking about looking at the bios of some famous directors/pds/screenwriters and see what college they went to and do some research...most universities do exchange programs right? im not sure how thats going to work out but im crossing my fingers

what year are you? are you declared? film production?

this is a hard one... year-in-school wise i'm a sophomore, credit-wise i'm a junior, and this is my 2nd semester in the program... i'm a film major with narrative production emphasis (there's narrative, documentary, multimedia and critical studies) and art direction track...

speaking of applications, i just found out that the reason i got into the major despite my lack of experience and skills was my film review essays... one of the staff told me they're just as impt. as your sample of work... a lot of other applicants have impressive resumes and amazing samples but they did the essays like the night before and did a half-arsed job basically, so they didn't get in... idk if it's the same at your school but man, i guess don't underestimate those essays, though i agree they're a pain in the neck to write...

isee i see
when i was applying to colleges back when i was senior in high school i asked people if i had a chance despite a pretty much blank portfolio and most (if not all) said its not really important if u have a lot of films or what not...they just want to see some creativity and potential in writing
but still when i came to my school it realli did feel like everyone was alreadi making movies and i was the only one who hadnt had any experience...of course im still undeclared...*sigh*

i'd love to major in film. that's a job i would love to have but getting into it is really hard and my school doesn't really have any great film classes.... i'm just trying to find a nice "safe" career instead =\

do any of u guys make films for fun?

well, editing is always easier when you shoot on video rather than camera (not to mention digital transfer costs a lot of time and money)... so when you said video, what kind of video is it? mini-dv? vhs? hi8? i've only edited video shot on mini-dv and you need either a usb cord or a firewire cord to connect it to your computer... then if you have an editing software (personally i love final cut) it will detect the camera and let you transfer the video... after that you can edit... if you don't know if you have the cord or not, bring your camera to your nearest computer store and tell them you need to edit the film, they should be able to help you...

on a completely separate note, so i'm taking this class called intermediate film production where a group of students make a short film: develop the script, shoot it, and edit it... we just got done with prep (the script went through like 10 rewrites) and we start shooting next week... so in this class, we rotate the positions, as in today i'm gaffer and the next i'm art director and so on... they just announced the schedule and i'm directing the second day (next wednesday) and i'm so nervous you guys... the professor, the ta (who's kinda hot) and two of the students work professionally and they'll be watching our every move so tears.gif

I'm not exactly a film major, but I would love to be in theatre someday. I've found myself really enjoy acting and am taking a few classes pertaining to it. It is one of those things where the more experience and work I have with it, the better I'll become (hopefully).

YOU LIKED GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES?
freak that movie made me depressed like no other~i had never seen a movie so depressing~just thinking about it makes me depressed...darn

i shouldnt have asked this question...i realized i actually dont like movies haha...like i said...yes i just realized im the film student who doesnt like watching movies

but there are ones i liked
my sassy girl, the killers, spirited away, my neighbor totoro, mulan, finding nemo, 50 first dates, monty python, casino royal (new but i was impressed~i thought it would be pretty dumb like other 007 movies)

im sure theres more but i cant think of them right now
as you can tell by my list i was movies for pure entertainment~a lot of them are animated but i alreadi talked about that...and the first two are korea comedies...

this is why ill probably go into tv/drama than film

can u edit a vh tape? isnt that impossible o.0? unless u actually like cut and tape?

your class sounds interesting~cant wait to take classes like that...i think id be more scared to be like editor or a gaffer~im not good with those kinda stuff...im good with people and words...not so good with computers and machines'

err i've never worked on vhs before so i'd suggest going to computer/video store and ask them... i don't think it'd be that different from a minidv though, where you capture and transfer the footage into computer files and edit (cut) the files instead of the tape itself... and no, i'm not located in la, but as a note if only i were i'd totally help out on your shoot...

well, liking movies that are entertaining doesn't discount you from being a good filmmaker... i mean, if all filmmakers were strictly into the arthouse serious stuff, who'd make the entertaining movies in the first place?

see i have two types of favorite films: one is films i saw once, loved, and that's enough, like grave of the fireflies and children of heaven... the other type is films i love and watch over and over again, like singin' in the rain (which is incredibly entertaining) and dead of night... and i mean i liked my sassy girl and monty python is totally my jam (i like life of brian best i'm not even sure why, and i wish the flying circus would've gone on forever)...
besides, i know a spectrum of film students, from ones who love marvel comic adaptations more than anything to one who only watches fritz lang and godard stuff (urgh)... both make v. good filmmakers and can actually cross over and work on films they wouldn't enjoy watching and do a great job... so i say do whatever you want, really...

and yeah, actually i'm most nervous being DP (director of photography/cinematographer) cos i'm not good at figuring out lighting, but director's pretty heavy responsibility considering he actually lords over the DP... i have a feeling i'm gonna let my DP make all the decisions regarding the camera...

and yeah, our short film is a mockumentary (it's funny cos they've never done a mock in the class before and we run into so many problems that the professor said he'd never let the class do mock again) about this super peppy home-fitness-guru mom who tries to lose weight so she can go to her high school reunion in her prom dress... so yeah... and i'm only directing one day out of ten, the other days i'll be filling out other positions...

hm the last tim burton + johnny depp didnt wow me too much...im talking about the corpse bride..i mean i didnt dislike it but i didnt realli like it either...i think the problem was that the move didnt really direct to audiences...it was a bit too much for children..but its also not quite adult orientated either

i'm more excited for the spiderman than i ever was for the second because we're going into symbiote-land here... which means, if everything goes well... CARNAGE! omg best spiderman villain ever i hope they make another sequel with carnage...

i'm not a harry potter fan but i'm looking forward to the next one cos they're always fun holiday movies... but honestly i think they peaked with the 3rd film and now they're heading downhill in terms of direction... i mean, it seems cuaron is as good as you can get except if they can top it with the last film...

pirates is quite exciting as well but i'm not excited about the fantastic four sequel, i didn't like the 1st one that much...

I'm really interested in making dramas too.. especially ones in the Korean market. I really have no experience so far though.. my mom is set on my taking pre-pharm for now. dry.gif Any tips for getting started?

I would love to go to Korea and be a PA for awhile on some dramas.. fat chance though.

well it would realli help to have some sort of film degree i would think~unless you have connections in the korean entertainment industry~then you realli dont need much else dry.gif

and i just saw the posters for the pirate sequel...ok im going to say it: I TOTALLY PREDICTED ASIANS WOULD BE IN THE NEXT PIRATES MOVIE
YAYUR

hahahaha does this happen to anyone else? sometimes my predictions about the entertainment industries are dead accurate...like i totally predicted someone would make a "making of the band" for a girl band...and apparently jyp is planning doing that...or maybe they cancelled the idea...but nevertheless..
it also happens sometimes in my story..for hsr i wrote a scene and a couple of weeks later i saw the same thing in dbsk vacation...i was not too happy about that tho ><
i also predicted crossdressing would be the next thing and now theres a new taiwanese drama called "hana kimi"

but then again~its a 50/05 for me...there are tons of predications i made that have yet to come true T.T

wow, this thread is like... my people! hahah

I'm a film major at Boston University, which isn't really known for film so I think my chances have depleted a bit in that sense. My mom preferred I attend a widerange university "just in case" I don't want to do film anymore.

I'm kind of on the fence about my specific major though. I think people find it a given you want to be a director when they hear film but that just isn't me. I'm more of a behind the scenes person. Editing is my first choice, but when I help severely understaffed student projects I can be prop master, gaffer, camera, and producer all in one day. My only crutch about it editing is that I kind of have to wait for post-production when I also love to be on a set, watching the filming in production but it's hard to find a duality in that.

I had a question if any of you know or are interested in animated films? I've been contemplating whether to become an animation editor because they have a much bigger role throughout the entire film from the very beginning of storyboards to the very end, but not sure as of yet. My goals would be animation editing anime in Japan and my ultimate ultimate dream would be animation editing at PIXAR.

Here's to dreaming! It's what we filmmakers strive on, IMO.

btw losborrachos is your signature a twist on a scene in Fight Club? I love that movie!

err pika pika is right, either you have connections in the industry or work your way slowly with the rest of us dreamers... anyways if you're really interested in it, you can try just being a PA in w/e productions they have where you live... you don't necessarily need a film degree but it would speed up the process a lot (mostly because you get more access to productions and you can network if as you're getting your degree...)

yay chow yun fat! and yeah it happens sometimes... like when america's next top model came out i thought, "man they're gonna have a male version and a designer version" and they did... or remakes and adaptations of films and things like that... i think the entertainment industry has become more and more predictable... i haven't read your fic though, which part of vacation?

here's to understaffed student projects! yeah i've had my share of on-set multitasking... i know people always assume you wanna direct, and that's true most of the time but i mean i'm happy just being art director... actually i'm happy just being on-set, i think it's the best feeling in the world... and that is exactly why i don't wanna do editing no matter how lucrative it is (and i think it's the most lucrative areas in film production)...

uhm, i'm not really interested in animation since i've mentioned i love being on set... but it's true that editors play a bigger role in animation, and part of that is because you don't really have to depend on the director's coverage... the animation major here in my college is frankly is way better than the film major, the pixar (and ilm) ppl like them a lot... like in the student film festival when they show the animated shorts during the credits they always credit pixar for "special help" and things like that... ever considered transferring? biggrin.gif

the jaejoong part sleep.gif" i felt very unoriginal~hey if u have time i would love for u to read my story ^.^ its be great to get an opinion from another film student ^.^
but yeah sometimes i think (especially for the korean industry) companies are taking less risks and just going with whatever fad too so you can easily predict whats to come..which doesnt make sense in my mind since it seems that the original ideas do really well

my friend also wants to be an editor...before school i had no idea what kinda power editor had over the movie process...i was surprised and interested but im not much of a computer person and i like working hands on with people more...
but cant an editor also watch production? wouldnt that give the editor a better feel for the film?

Wow, I was totally wrong. You should definitely see it, I love it haha the quote in the film goes something like "you are not the car you drive. you are not the food you eat. you are not the clothes you wear. etc.."

yeah I used to joke with my friends how actors should bow down to editors because they have just as much power as the director in deciding whether you could be cut in or out. hahah I think it's rare that an editor would get the chance to view production because all we really need is the film when it's done and the director to sit beside us. Maybe a bit in post-production but production we're not really needed.

Constantly! My parents don't like me majoring in film at all so they constantly tell me to minor in something as a back up in case I become a bum basically. I have my own worries as well because it's such a hard business to enter, but I'm hoping that it's easier on the technical side since it doesn't deal much with looks and such. This is also a farfetched and hard dream to attain but I wanted to become a film critic. I used to be the film critic and arts page editor for my high school's newspaper and English/Writing is my best subject so I thought it was a good melding of both interests. I haven't taken my required Screenwriting class yet but who knows maybe that'll be added to my list. I just can't think of anything too far from film

the jaejoong part was one of the better in terms of writing i think (i mean, as much as i love yunho... another sick-girl episode? really?) so yay for you for coming up with it before the writers who did that... and i'll check out your fic soon, although i'm more of a silent reader. i'm not so good at writing fiction (i have this problem where all of my characters end up being... me) so i feel like i shouldn't be criticizing others' writing... but yeah, i'll read it.

actually i just realized that i haven't even thought of it. since i decided on studying film i've always assumed that everything will work out, and really for me "work out" means i'll art direct anything, anywhere... but yeah, i don't have a plan b, which is a bit scary... so i don't know i don't know i don't know tears.gif

yeah, usually editors don't attend production because they only need the footage... and because the big this-is-how-we-make-films rulebook says they don't...

being a film critic is a good alternative i guess. and i would've loved the job if i hadn't discovered the sheer joy of working on set. i don't know but for me being on set is like drug addiction, when we wrap on a production i go through some major MAJOR withdrawal symptoms and my life feels meaningless. it's unhealthy...

yeeaaaaaahhhh i thought about being a film critic too...but thinking about being forced to watch an equal share of good and bad movies doesnt sound appealing to me~maybe for a specific genre like comedy or action? cuz i need to be entertained

Ah yeah, I don't have any experience though I'm very interested.. the only thing I've done is been an extra in a movie, and I was going to stick around and be a PA (they offered to me) but I had to go back home because school started. dry.gif

Hah, I wish I had connections in the Korean film industry.. but if you can work your way up here, why can't you do it in SK you know? Go out there and do whatever you can find while doing your degree.. while surfing the other day I found a school that looks good there:
