What is Daum? [A01]

Daum (다음) is a very popular online service in South Korea. It provides free email, instant-messaging, forums, shopping, news, and most notably, Cafes. The Cafes provide a luxury of media that's hard to find elsewhere, including videos, pictures, etc.

Unfortunately, Daum's registration for foreigners is not very friendly to those who don't know a lot of Korean. So whether or not you don't know any Korean or you just have a small question, feel free to find what you want from this thread. So let's begin then!

(ABOVE) After you click the light-blue button (STEP 3), you will need to provide a valid phone number. I recommend using your cellphone number.



This will send an automated call to your phone. Pick up your phone and you should hear the voice of a woman speaking in Korean. She will be telling you a code in Korean which you must write down. If you didn't get the code the first time, simply dial 1 on your phone and the message will replay.

Use the key below to help you pinpoint what numbers are being spoken:



You then need to type the confirmation code into a blank field that should have appeared below the field where you typed your phone number in.



Hit this button afterwords: . If all goes well, you should be transferred to the next step...


(ABOVE) For the Name (Korean) field, you will need Korean IME if you're using a non-Korean computer.

FAQ [A03]

Does the automated voice that calls speak in Korean?

Yes. If you are a bit sketchy on knowing your numbers in Korean, I recommend that you find a way to record the message and translate it right after. WARNING: Dialup users MUST use a mobile phone to receive the automated code. If you choose to disconnect your dialup connection to receive the code, you will be required to restart registration.

I have a problem at the end of the registeration section,
after I put in my code, I click on the button that said 'Hwok In' * I think*
Then I click on the continue button, but nothing happens.
I'm quite sure that I did everything correct for there isn't any pop-up windows..
Help?

for the cafes, do you know how i can register at the cafes? I can see the webpage, but i can't see the pictures, media, ect.

i tried to register many times and i put the number in the box and clicked the button and it didnt work and gave me this message...인증번호가 일치하지 않습니다
when they call do you need to tell them something before you hang up or sumtin...i rly wanna register

Sorry I haven't logged in here for a really long time now. I've been working on other things that have been keeping me busy. So far, I've been getting a lot of PMs about foreign country codes and the Cafes. If you live in the United States, the foreign country code you would use is 1. If not, you will have to look up your country code via Google. Will post a website where you can get them.

A tutorial on the Cafes should be rolling out sometime soon. So stay tuned...

What does that mean? Does it have something to do with my member rank? I recognize the words 준회원 and 정회원.

you have to do a "level up" (등업) in order to view and use the features of daum cafes...
there should be a section called "등업 신청" and you need to make a post there asking for a 등업... and the admins/mods go through the posted requests sequentially and level you up... it'll probably take a day or two, even three, depending on web traffic/activity.

Thanks for the info! Is there a specific format to follow when asking for a level up? Like what do I write? I wrote 등업해주세요 and I got a reply with this message: 등업양식에 맞게 신청해주세요. I think that means I didn't write my request right and I still can't view those boards.

make sure you posted in the 등업신청 section... if you did, look at the other requests and see how other people did it... some cafes only accept 등업 requests on certain days of the week, say, only on wednesdays or something...

I don't get why we are having people who are non-Korean register for Daum.
It is a place for Koreans only.
This is exactly why Daum is having really strict restrictions on the site now.
Due to fake ID's and etc.
