It's my first yr as a freshman and I was wondering if anyone goes to De Anza. I'd be nice to meet people with similar interests.

How are you liking De Anza?

I don't want to sound depressing but De Anza is hella depressing. Most of the people there are stuck with their high school friends and don't want to open up to new friends for some reason. Also, everybody is stuck with their high school boyfriend/girlfriend which I find very odd since most people I knew ended up separating to explore a new life in college. On a brighter note, De Anza gives a pretty good education.

i went to de anza for 2 years. i'm gonna sound like such a nerd...but i LOVED de anza.
^i actually made a lot of new friends at de anza.
but yeah...there are 3 kinds of people at de anza.
1. adults who are making a career change or just going to learn stuff they want.
2. students who are trying to transfer and focused on getting classes done.
3. people who are in their 6th year at de anza still getting nowhere...
hopefully, you'll stay on track #2.

I took a few courses at DeAnza to get college credit while still in high school..
I thought everyone was very open. o_O I was actually really scared at first b/c I thought I would make no friends since I figured no one would want to befriend a person from high school.. But as you start talking to people around you and asking questions about hw and such you find that they are really open and willing to talk to you. And if you are smart they will come up to you and ask you. BUT, it is a community college, and most are there to get credits done and transfer to a "real" 4-yr college.
It's better if you're in small classes rather than large classes of 40+ people.

This is my 2nd year at De Anza.
At first I was a bit disappointed that I had to go to a CC, but De Anza isn't bad at all. There are a lot of intelligent people there [I used to think cc's were for lazy people. I know, I know. Bad judgment].
I think people there are pretty open. You just have to get over your own insecurities and get to know them. It's not like high school where everyone already as a preconceived idea of who you are and everyone is in their own cliques. It's a new start. Join a club.
My first year I didn't do much other than go to class and go home. During that time, I felt De Anza was just... a school. This year I joined Circle K, met new people and I've been having a blast with them. [Club Day is THIS Thursday, so join up!!].
I was also surprised at how many international students the school has. Sometimes I get annoyed by the foreign students, but they're nice and helpful once you get to know them. I think it's a great opportunity to meet people from around the world (or rather, Asia. Haha)
Overall I think De Anza is a good school. If you make use of what the school offers (clubs, tutor centers) then your experience will be worth while. I particularly enjoy the fact they give you AMC tickets for 5.50. I buy hecka tickets lol.

SO true. My classmates from high school who go to De Anza are hanging out with the exact same people. Is it harder to socialize at a CC? *shrug*
and I recall reading/hearing somewhere that De Anza is one of the best CCs in.... California? the US? I don't remember

i went there last year. wasn't too bad except for this one calculus class. i hated the teacher so much. the commute sucked too until i started scheduling so that i only went 2 days a week. oh yeah, working for the bookstore really sucked too. but yeah, i didn't really make any friends either until the last semester i finally realized one of my friends from high school still went there lol.

yea i agree that the people aren't helpful. Especially the african american lady with the braided hair. She's always bumbed out like she got something stuck in her ass.
But besides that I really like it there. So many hot asian fobs.

thats one of the reasons i love college life. Because everyone is nice and open. You don't have to feel afraid anymore. Not like anyone is going to throw orange and banana peals at you.

You know it's the best JC in California right? Therefore nicknamed UCDA? Hahaha. It's pretty much a direct feeder into the better UCs... I know a lot of people degrade community colleges but a lot of brilliant students/professors go there. There are a lot of students that move to the U.S. in the middle of highschool and require some work with their English skills before moving onto Berkeley, UCLA, etc. I took tons of classes there during high school summer breaks (and my junior and senior year) and I was actually surprised at how driven my peers were.
Competition there is at a higher level than Foothill or West Valley, but you're much more likely to go to a good UC~ the fact that they honor the quarter system and make transferring courses painless is another plus ^^ I used 22 De Anza credits + AP credits during my first year at UCLA- so technically, I wasn't a freshman entering, but a sophomore. ^^

I went to deanza my first quarter. And now I'm at UCSD, but I kind of missed it. It was always close to lots of places to eat and the classes were super easy. I'm probably thinking of doing summer classes there because they add up the same units. ;]

I'm from SJ (near evergreen college) but I commute to De Anza. At first I dreaded commuting but it's actually not that bad if you carpool between the hours of 7am - 9:30am. After 9:30am there's no traffic so I could get there within 15-20 minutes. Otherwise, it's 25 minutes carpooling during rush hours, 30-50 minutes without carpool.

I signed up for SJSU, but just like your case, the only JC that has Korean language classes is De Anza, but I don't know if its worth it to take the 2 years at De Anza, then transfer somewhere else..

BUMP
anyone here taking the counseling 101 course during summer? Also, I'm debating on three foreign language classes: Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean. Which would you guys recommend? I regret not taking Japanese in high school.
English is strictly my first language and I pretty much the only language I speak and understand.

lol yeah, i tell that to everyone i know. i think it's pretty lame, it makes me feel extremelyyy bored at school.
this thread died fast & no one's posted here in awhile so i decided to haha..
i'm in my first year second quarter right now (well, third if you count 1 class during last summer)
i always feel like everyone's in their own bubble around campus or in class.since that's like that, i tend to do the same i guess lol.

I guess no one ever responded to my post right above yours. My first year second quarter as well. Maybe it is because I grew up in East Side, near Evergreen College that I am surprised there are a lot of international students, specifically Chinese. Where I'm from my high school population was predominantly vietnamese, philipino, and hispanic.
Schdedule wise, I got my spring schedule all set, but there seems to be an error with adding the 9:30 Pop Culture class to my schedule.

yeah there's a lot of international students/fobs. i went to westmont high in campbell and the population there is mostly caucasian, but i'm not really suprised about how it's like at de anza because i was expecting it i guess.
my spring '08 schedule is: ewrt2, philosophy 1, math49b, and i'm waitlisted in an ICS 5 class..i really need to start trying harder starting next quarter
argh finalss next week =/ good thing spring break's right around the corner though

DeAnza is alright. They have a few really good professors, and some really bad ones, especially math. I had some horrible teachers. One that has a thick accent and rolls his eyes everytime someone asks a question (Trig), and another one that is amusing but teaches garbage (Statistics prof). Otherwise many of them have been decent.
It is a good way to get an education without breaking your bank, but sometimes you get what you pay for. I'm on my last 2 semesters at SJSU, but I might take a class or two at DeAnza for fun/education in the summer depending on my employment status.
My gripe about DeAnza is all the students who don't give a crap about school, and can rather feel like high school.
