Vista is out soon. Anybody planning on installing it, or have you already taken the plunge?

I might get a copy just to have a looksie - I'll run it in a virtual machine so no 3d fanciness but it's not a big issue. How about you?

Haha awesome my thread is official! Vista is out NOW. More info on wikipedia

my new dell comes with a vista express upgrade.
they will send the disc after it is released i guess

Not going to purposely get it but I do get a free version of it through MSDN next year (in 2 semesters) when I take my next computer science class anyways
Stardust
I want Vista.. it looks so cool. sad.gif
DKYang
Nope. Until everything works for it, like drivers installed, fixed all the bug, and etc.

On my laptop, I'll be sticking with XP until it dies. As for the desktop, I might if it isn't too pricey, all the bugs are fixed, and everything works with it, but that's when I build a new computer in the second half of this year.
aaandy
my friend is getting it from his computer science class. he's giving me a key
Febronia
I have windows vista installed on my notebook computer.

All I can say is, I love it =).

My dad's investing into a company that's working with Microsoft on Vista so maybe he'll get me something... But I don't plan on it.
watcher
i'll live and die by xp until it's no longer supported (by MS or other major software corporations) or until i get my next PC upgrade.
i dont really need the vista upgrade for my needs. at least that'll be the case for my home PC.

i'll probably get the automatic upgrade at work, so i wont really have a matter of say in it.
slau
Interesting to see most people not going to upgrade. Aren't you guys at all interested in the new features?

I'm guessing that most computer manufacturers are going to start dishing out Vista so whenever new PCs come into the office I'd better know how to deal with them. We could just reimage but Vista is an inevitability so we might as well start figuring out the new system.

I've already got a copy of Vista Ultimate. It's a beefy operating system. Although very nicely done.

If you do plan to use Vista, please please make sure that your computer is ABOVE the minimum requirements.

Nero 7 is incompatable with Vista as of 1-23-07, but Ahead is working on a fix.

EAX 3D-sound is disabled. Some companies are working on a work-around for this.

Pinnacle Studio 10 as of today, is not currently compatable with Vista. They are working on this.

But other than these 4 factors, it's an awesome operating system. Doesn't take a whole lot of getting used to either. I'm fairly certain that a lot of people's gripes will be washed away when they use it in person.

If anyone has used the Vista Beta's or RC's, please note that those builds did NOT have code optimization. I've noticed a huge performance boost with the final as compared to the Beta 2 release.

So yea, this is some of my experience with Vista so far biggrin.gif The only annoying thing is the little pop-up window I get for accessing the most rudimentary of config areas. Like setting my screen resolution for example.

Are these the only softwares so far or is it just from your experience?

NVidia SLI doesn't work either. Too bad if you're a big gamer.

I installed Vista into the virtual machine, but without 3D acceleration, it was pretty underwhelming so I'm going to dual boot it...

My computer's Vista capable; I'm basically getting a free upgrade from Dell for this laptop.

The interface looks okay, but I'm not really excited about it. We'll see how it goes though.

I should be getting a copy of Vista in a couple of weeks. I look forward to trying it out. I plan to keep XP installed, and put Vista in another partition. From my experience with Vista RC1, there looks to be quite a bit of software compatibility problems, so I'll keep XP just to be on the safe side.
dot1q
Planning to go to a 64 bit OS so might as well go Vista. 64 bit OS is problematic enough as it is so I can deal with the additional headaches. If I'm gonna deal with XP 64 bit woes, wont make such a difference with Vista 64 bit woes. I need the 64 bit os because I need the 8 gigs of ram.

What kind of work do you do? ph34r.gif

XP is still a great OS by all means but I'll be really excited when I actually get my hands on Vista. I'll be finishing high school soon so I'll likely be getting Vista alongside a new computer. My current computer would not run Vista too well unfortunately.

I do a lot of virtualization on my pc. Being able to support numerous VM's with load intensive applications is a must. My current usable 3gb isn't cutting it. With quad processors being available now, the jump to 8gb is natural. There are a couple of leisure apps I use which wont run on 64 bit so I'm still debating what I should do. Ideally I should keep my current pc xp and build the new comp as a dedicated Vmware server. However, it hurts to spend that much and not be able to use the comp for leisure as well. (I love gaming as well.. smile.gif) My other option is just to stick with 4gb ram and a new computer build with XP and load balance my needs between the new comp and my current comp. I must have been at newegg like 10 x this past month at the point of purchase and hesitating at the last minute. If only 32bit limit wasnt 4gb of ram, I wouldn't even consider 64 bit or Vista any time in the near future.

i'm getting vista business for free from a promotion by ms months ago. but i dont think i will be using it, since i'm so used to XP. maybe when they release sp1 for vista will i use the OS. smile.gif i heard vista drains alot of memory?

Those are just the softwares from my personal experience. I figured some of the people here might also use those applications, so I thought I'd share thier "status" with vista..

Microsoft has recently released Virtual PC 2007 Beta. Supposedly it's "compatible" with Vista. What this means I don't know because I got vista to run on the 2004 version. So I'm hoping it has increased graphics compatibility. biggrin.gif
Virtual PC 2007

It's still beta though. and I'm kind of off topic >.>

^ I doubt virtualization will support full DirectX any time in the near future. Let alone virtualization as a guest on a host OS.

I give it another year before Vista becomes the norm.

Right now, My XP is fine and I think most people are just too lazy to try Vista out because XP works just fine.

I will try Vista out when I upgrade my components maybe. tongue.gif

Well I managed to get Vista onto my Macbook Pro with no serious issues. My year old mac get's a Windows Experiance Index base score of 4.1 so it's supposedly more than capable of running all the new features of Vista. The only thing that doesn't appear to work are the volume and screen control keys, and the remote control. And possibly power management because Vista is eating up my battery like crazy.

One nice touch is that eac program get's a volume control, so those irritating flash ads with sound can finally be silenced. smile.gif

So those adventuous lot who do have Vista, what do you think of it?

I have been using vista since RC1. I have liked it so far. Compatibilities wise, I haven't had any problems. It didn't recognize my x1950 but ATI already had Vista drivers when I bought it. It's going good, and the whole Aero effect is cool, I still feel it's kind of bitting OSX's style, but it seems that's the reason why most people by mac's these days. Not because of what they may or may not be capable of, but all the cosmetics that come with it.

lol vista is getting released on my birthday xD
i won't be getting it because i have a mac =P

I'll stick with XP. When I get my new computer for school then I'll have Vista, but until then I'm using XP.
annyong
i'll probably get it when i build my computer, which i dont know when. vista looks nice though smile.gif
milk tea!
sticking with XP until Vista is normal to have..
or when I go to college, which is when I get a new computer~~
Tepper
I'm putting vista off until there is more widespread support for everything I want to do(hardware&software). Hopefully, it won't be a large decrease in performance from the overhead caused by the pretty glass and junk.
saera
As soon as they work out the kinks with Korean websites. That probably wont be for a couple months...maybe a year...O_O
iamsars
i have vista on my new computer.. and 1 day after installing vista the motherboard is dead...

VERY little support for vista altho it looks pretty nice...
iE: i couldn't install mobo drivers cuz i had vista, and wen i tried updating bios it crashed.. thus now i have a dead mobo

All programs could run vista, and like the previous person said nvidia has drivers for vista
not sure about anything else as i didn't get a chance to get any further...
Uberads
I'll wait a while, see if there's any bugs etc.

I am not about to put vista on this crappy computer..
I'm gonna get a new computer soon anyways, so i'll wait for the sp release and then buy a new computer.

And now, a special message from Bill Gates on why you should upgrade:

I just bought a new laptop and it's free to upgrade to vista...I've seen the necessary forms & stuff so I should be getting it soon. But after reading ur comments here, not too sure if I should use it or not, when I get it.

I (and many others) felt the same way with the transition to XP. I mean why move over to a newer/buggier/more alien system compared to what we were running (win2k or whatever). Eventually we'll probably see a stabilization in Vista, but hey talk about adopting new OS's how about apple releasing huge updates (not-free) for their OS every year and a half or so? It seems to work, no one seems to compain about it, in fact, it's highly anticipated every time... and its less half-assed than service packs... maybe microsoft should try releasing huge updates with new junk like AV chat.. er... weird dashboard junk etc... (even though clones of those are already in vista 1.0) every once in a while instead of leaving us hanging for 5 years at a time. dry.gif

Yeah, same here. I just built my computer and along with my windows XP, there's an upgrade form to Vista costing around 80AUD. I'm not sure if I wanna use it now after these comments. mellow.gif

i am not going to buy it ....

http://www.dailytech.com/John+Carmack+Spea...article5665.htm

I'm gonna have to agree with John Carmack on this one. Aside from a prettier looking desktop, I could've stuck it out with Windows 95. There really is no reason to upgrade to Vista.
apparition
probably gonna upgrade in about a year for vista. iunno about you guys, but the main motivation for me is dx10 and dx10 games rolleyes.gif.

and ya...according to recent techsties, driver support and performacne sucks as of now...so its probably worth it to wait it out.
Reomani
for some reasons i don like Vista (trust issues) i used their trial version or wht so ever it called and it sucks so i may use it after couple years when everything is going far well.

I got my copy of Vista last Thursday. Got the 32-bit Business version by way of the Power Together promotion Microsoft ran a couple of months ago.

So far, Vista has been running fine on my computer. Vista certainly does look like a slightly nicer looking version of XP, thanks to the Aero Glass theme. There are a few little things that Vista does differently in regards to the Start Menu, keeping everything within a window, as opposed to opening a cascading window when you click on programs. The Flip 3D feature looks nice, but it's not useful for me. I refer using Alt-Tab if I want to sort through different program windows. That part is improved since Vista actually shows a thumbnail sized picture of a program running, as opposed to just a program icon in XP.

The negatives so far come in the form of program compatibility and gaming performance. I use Antivir as my antivirus for XP, but I could not get it to install in Vista. Instead, I'm using Avast. Installing Madden 07 went without a problem, a little suprising since I had troubling installing it on XP, but the gameplay was slow. I've yet to install Counterstrike Source, but from my RC 1 experience, that game has no trouble running. Since I still have XP, I plan to keep the games installed under that OS, and probably do that with future games until Direct X 10 shows me enough of a difference to make me want to install under Vista.

I've yet to really try any of the Business specific features. The Encryption File System reminds me of the encryption system under XP that I tinkered with, but with Vista it actually asks if I want to backup my encryption keys. Since I'm the only one who uses this computer, I don't really need the EFS.

At this point, I suggest to those considering upgrading to Vista to stay put for a while. If you have a free upgrade, just hold off on installing Vista since XP will do just fine for now. Wait until the compatibility and driver issues are worked out before installing, so that way you don't get stuck with programs you can't run, or games you can't play.
Jay Chou
i certainly hope battlefield 2 will run on vista =)

i'm using it now, looks neat
