Does anybody like these Vietnamese submarine sandwiches called bánh mě here? There is this one place called "Lee's Sandwiches" that sells a lot of these and I go there to order some of those. I usually take out the jalapeno slices though cuz they're too hot.

love it!! especially after a long day at school hahaa
xkrndreamer
i usually go to the one in fullerton. but there are tons of them in orange county. that lee is one rich guy. the sandwiches used to be around a dollar and a quarter, but they raised the prices over the years. i dont like their special meat. the texture is similar to rubber. i do like their grilled chicken, however.

I like sandwiches with chả lụa the best~
Xoalilsinger

matango88

I dont like the green hot peppers, I take it out

They are definitely my fave sandwiches of all time. There's a Lee's sandwich place in Milpitas and I thought they were overpriced. In Oakland Chinatown, I can get them for $1.50 or $1.75. I remember them being 99cents when I was younger though. I love the jalepenos pepper with them.

ooooh those are the best on the go food when u dont have time for something fancy. mmmmm delicious.

banh mi oh yeahh
i love the bbq pork one, although i'd eat any of them.. they're all pretty good
lee's sandwiches aren't really good imo. the taste is kinda bland.
i like a whole bunch of other small shops that sell them.. their bread seems fresher and the meats are seasoned better + they stuff it more than lee's. not to mention they're a lot cheaper too. :|

lee's does have goood hot wings though. and those green looking waffle/pancake things!
and they sell those huge crossaints at a pretty good price. esp. if you buy them the day after... it's three for $1.50 and they're HUGEEE so you really get your money's worth w00t.gif
K4Ice
ohhhh yummy!!! Makes me want to go get some right now!! I like the ones with thit nguoi in them - sorry...on work comp so no accents. I love the jalapenos!

I also love banh mi. My great aunt who visited California several times bring back Lee's Sandwiches banh mi and it doesn't taste as good as I heard people raved about. The banh mi they sell in my city taste much better, lots more meat and lots more flavor. However, the banh mi that I ate when I was in Viet Nam is the best one there is. And I don't like the Vietnamese pepper to be in my banh mi either, but I love "do chua" pickled daikon and carrot and paté in my banh mi.
sunshine4ever
dude, this thread makes me hungry...lol
yeah, i like lee's sandwiches, but there are other banh mi stores that are good as well..
icysnowbubble
i love banh mi cha lua!!! *drools* , lee sandwich is pretty good but its not the best. i usually like my bread more "bread-ish" hahahaha but other than that lee sandwiches is the way to go! my mom really likes that there bread is thin. so yeah who ever love thin baguettes would love lee sandwichs

are these sandwiches a French invention or Vietnamese & French ?

I think it's a combination of French because of the type of bread ,and the pate spread [both French in origin]

the type of meats and veggies are more asian influence / viet
TygrrLilly
I work at a little Vietnamese cafe and make banh mi and tapioca drinks (we have other stuff, but the kitchen staff does the stuff like pho).

I like them a lot and usually make a bbq pork one with extra cucumbers and cilantro w/ no carrots or jalapenos for myself on break.

i know in cambodia, when i was there, they had a khmer name for those banh mi sandwiches and its a french name o_o but it sounds sorta like banh mi but it has the french-y part like "bat-tae" LOL

They were influenced by the French because the French used to rule Vietnam. x]
Viet bakeries are also french influenced, too.

Mmmm. Yes, Banh Mi is GOOD! I dun like Lee's Sandwiches though. sleep.gif;
Their baguettes get hard after a while.

The one here in Melbourne, Springvale~ ROCKS! It's got the crunchy pork, grilled chicken, nem nuong, and some other one i forgot. With the black bean sauce, Sweet carrots, cucumber, spring onion. *droools* I don't like those meat ones in that picture u posted. It's $3.50AUD here~~ Expensive, I remember they use to be $1!

Banh Mi is definitely a Vietnamese dish and creation. Although it use some of the French ingredients such as the French inspired baguette and paté. I don't know if it is because the French bakeries where I lived suck or not, but I don't like the way they made their baguettes versus the way Vietnamese stores made it. For one thing, their baguettes get hard as a brick after you leave them out for a day, and I can leave plain banh mi outside for a week and the inside is still soft and the outside still crunchy.
candydive.
i think thats what i eat.. not sure but since someone mentioned jalapeno peppers ima just think its what i eat.

i always take out teh jalapeno peppers and i only eat the 1 with the cooked pork roll meat or the one thats iunno.. my friend eats teh shredded pork one

Yum. Banh mi is good, especially when i'm in a hurry to get somewhere. I usually go to Lee's Sandwiches too, but that's not exactly the best places to get banh mi. If i have time, i'll usually go down to garden grove & find one of those little banh mi shops ^^
soliloquy!
I loveeeeee banh mi! I used to eat dat biet a lot, but now it changed to that chicken one at Banh Mi Saigon. <3
Goodness, I can never get tired of banh mi. I love the meat with the red border or something, lol, but don't know what they're called. It's not thit nuong.
