Do you girls still wear clothes that are considered for teens or preteens? I'm 22 and I'm still shopping in the juniors department at JC Penny, Kohls, Mervyns, Forever 21, etc. I don't mind dressing young since I look younger than my age anyway. I look 17-18, not 22. My parents expect me to dress like a woman and shop at a woman's department. I think I should stay dressing young since youth doesn't last forever. I have a cousin in her early 30s still dressing like a teenager.

I don't like any of the clothes in the women's department since they look old to me that they would suit my mother better. Do you girls still shop in the juniors department? What about your friends and other people you know?
Ladyhawke
I am a plus-size girl. I have been that way the majority of my life so I can't fathom shopping in the Misses Department.

As far as clothes, I think clothes do not represent an age but rather facets of a person's personality.

I dress the way that best expresses my personality, which I cannot deny can be affected by one's stage of life but I don't think it dictates fully.

=] wear whatever makes you happy~

i try changing up my style once in a while.. but i still love wearing flats with giant bows on them with skinny jeans lol but sometimes i will wear a suit when necessary.. lols =]

Hell, I buy clothes from Delia's, the girl's section at Target...Juniors at department stores...blah blah blah. I don't care. I also look like I'm not 18 yet so I guess that helps...
angelZ
i still buy clothes from hollister, AF, F21...lol
i like to wear whatever's comfortable...but i'm trying to change my style & mature it up...^^''
SsssHhhh
I like to wear whatever makes me comforable. I'm 21, I WORK in the Juniors section at Macy's. So I shop there anyways, and there's alot more "adultish".. I guess clothes, like working clothes in our BCX, tempted, Rampage, and XOXO area.. but no I still wear juniors clothes because I also don't look 21. Honestly, it's whatever you're comfortable wearing. =)

There's a fine line between dressing like an adult and a kid though. I mean - I have a co-worker that is constantly being sent home to change or being reprimanded for her choice in clothing because she honestly looks like my 16 year old niece. It's fine to dress like that when you're off with your friends (to a point) but not at work. As long as you understand the right time and place of the attire.

I can see where your parents are coming from though - I understand wanting to you dress more appropriately. You're at the age where you are going to be entering the corporate world and trust me - inside of outside of the office, being seen dressed in a certain way and will affect how the public looks at you AND your company. While on or off the clock - you still are a representative of the company.

Personally I'm 24 and I've started to search for jeans, because I just realized that in the last 5 years - I own 2 pairs of jeans and about 50 suits. The joys of being an "adult" in corporate America.

**side note: you don't have to shop in the department stores for cute clothes that's adult like - I still won't shop at those places (Nordstrom's and Bloomingdales being the exceptions). Stores like H&M, New York and Company, Ann Taylor offer cute outfits, that makes you look like a fashionable ADULT and not a trendy teen. To be able to set the bar for fashion instead of following it - is ten times better. Being seen as a beautiful, assertive, and confident woman gives you such a boost. Being seen as a young, maybe not so mature or wise, but beautiful teen may be nice but the woman thing is so much better.**

lol I'm just 5 ft. :/ and i was wearing stuff that I wore since elementary school until they wore out/faded away XD. That's probably why everyone thinks i'm so young mellow.gif
YUNA!
I'm 5' too~ ^^
I dont necessarily dress "younger".. just that I wear a lot of pink which makes me look even younger than I already look >.<

Whenever I wear more mature stuff like formal suits for the office, I feel really out of place..... and people that know me personally say businesswear doesnt suit me~ so I usually just opt for my pinky clothes in the end haha..
blueangel15
hey if you look young why not dress young.......but it is creepy if you look like a 40 year old and ur in teenage clothings......
AnikiJin
I don't intentially dress young. I dress for my age.. which means, yes I look old.

I agree.. when you are marching 50, and dress up like LInsey Lohan creeps me out too.
seeepluss
I'm the totally opposite. . although I'm only 14 I look 16-17+! x-x; probably because my height and maturity ._.

I'm 23 and I just dress whatever? o_o Regardless of what I wear, I still look young unless I wear make up.

Hmm... well, I guess you could say I look older when I go to work because I wear corporate clothing but other than that, I wear skinny jeans, sneakers and a jumper/t-shirt.

I reckon the older you get, you worry more about the price rather than the brand.

The thing is..."the real world" does not equate "corporate world." Both of my parents are lawyers (very white collar), but they don't expect me to dress like I just stepped off Capitol Hill because...I'm never going to be in that kind of job. For directors, artists, writers, etc., the "real world" is not wearing a suit and tie to go sit in a cubicle or in a big, spacious office. It's being in the field, getting your hands dirty, thinking on your feet, and not worrying about scuffing your newly polished shoes.

it's ok. i am 24 and ppl still say i look like 18 and act even younger. I dun care too much. I just wanna be myself. i still shop wherever I can find stuff that fit and i like...i shop pretty every where from forever 21, wetseal, active to bloomingdales, nordstrom, zara, etc. i think your style define who you are. as long as you are happy and feel comfortable. doesn't matter too much what other said happy.gif

btw...this is my first post here hehe

some of us older girls--you know--the ones in our late 30's, early 40's? don't look more than 20-something...our ages don't really define us...it depends on our look. I know I'd wear what I want, but still want to wear what was right for the job.
mimilove
I'm 22 and I dress in casual clothes like a jean and tshirt. I find dressing young feels really weird for me. It seems the clothes for young girls look very 'girly' whilst clothes for women are 'sexier and maturer'. I think women clothes can really bring out the womanly features of your body. I don't work so I don't see the need to dress maturer really. It's more of what I'm comfortable in.
lilyphenix
Does wearing a pair of jeans and shirt count? People still get cofused by my age for some reasons.
rotten_sherry
Hmm....I am not really sure about this. But I think yes....it's kinda weird to watch older girls wearing younger outfit for her. Just think that it's not appropriate.
I am 20 and I wear outfit that older that I should be sometimes, but then I try to mix it and make it not too old anymore, is it counted as younger outfit?
For example, if I go out to work, I wear a shirt, blouse, and skirt, but I use sneakers, bwahahahha!!!!

However, I believe that outfit you wear isn't for your age, but for your personality, so no matter how old are you, the outfit has to show what are you, not how old are you.

I use to dress younger than my age but now I don't. I feel like I really blend in with the youngsters around me so I'm starting to dress my age now.. older.
shortee28
i'm all about comfort. so a lot of the times i wear very casual clothes. this would consist of a bit of skaterish style. but not hardcore skater. i wear skater shoes a lot. people think i'm 16 or 17... i'm already 20 years old, 21 in oct.... i'll be graduating in june... i even had a customer today doing friendly talk.. asking me about school, i said i'm in my final year and i'm graduating... she thought i was graduating grade 12 :/....... blahhh..... my bf is the same age but looks older... and one of his brothers friends thought i was really young. i was just wearing a jeans and a t-shirt.. i got really irritated, so now i've been going shopping a lot for new clothes to make me look more my age...

don't you hate it when ppl can still pull off wearing younger clothes but not get mistaken for age??
i struggle dressing older and ppl still thinking i'm still in my teens ='(
KTHubbybunch
Yes i do. i'm quoting the word "COMFORT" here. i still lovin' baggy clothings yet i change a bit & starts to be retroholic look. but doesn't matter! everyone has the freedom to express themselves on what to wear as long as they're comfortable with it. =)

todays style is ANYTHING GOES! boys wear like girls & girls wear like boys. ^-^
chiyo
i donīt think it matters. if itīs for work of course you have to fit in. but in private i dress exactly the way i like. i shop almost everywhere and iīm not afraid to wear childrenīs clothes, if they look good on me ^^. i donīt really care if i dress my age either, because i rather go for a certain style, which i think is ageless.
klx13
I'm 22, but I have a "baby face" so I feel like I always look younger than I am. Even now, I could probably pass for a high school student. I admit there are times when I feel like wearing more cutesy clothes, but I think the way I dress on a daily basis (like to work), does make me look my age. I work for a small start-up company, and the work atmosphere is very very casual. I can pretty much wear whatever I want (jeans, or whatever). But I do make it a point to look nice, and never sloppy (like super ripped jeans and dirty sneakers or something).

On rare occasions when I have zero makeup on and am just walking around in a hoodie and jeans... then I feel like a kid sleep.gif;

Hahahah! My mom is turning 44 soon and she still dresses like a teen. But that's only because she COPIED MY style. It's not that weird though cause she looks young. On the other hand, if a 65 year old dressed like a teen it would just be @_@;;

Anyways, my closet is full of "cute" clothes and not much mature clothes and I'm gonna be 21 soon. I don't like the whole suit idea and such. It's more professional I agree, but everyone looks the same! It's so dull and boring. Unfortunately, I still need to have some of those clothes in my closet just in case I have an interview for a job or something. So even though you don't like it, you should have some cause there are opportunities that may come up for you in life that requires dressing older even if it sucks.
obezag8
I'm 25 and I still check out the junior sections of department stores for cute stuff. I think that as long as it's my style it doesn't really matter where I get it or how old it makes me look.

Age is just a number. If the clothes fit...wear it. If I can squeeze my you know what into what I wore 10 years ago...I am going to wear it. laugh.gif
SouthernBelle82
Nah. I tend to go with my age. More so about comfortness and cuteness than anything. smile.gif
cin
I'm 20 and I still dress really young. It's not for the cuteness... it is more for comfty.
However, when I'm wearing make-up that's a different story.
My parents complained, but I don't care. Because I'm wearing comfty clothes that I like.... but I do dress the way my parents wants me to dress when we go to family gatherings or whatnot.
mrs. pakman
i think i dress pretty age appropriate. i'm 21 but still a college student, so it's all about comfy jeans, tshirts and hoodies.
i'm going to joining the work force soon though, so i do have a few dressy professional clothes, but i only wear them when i have to.
but yeah...a lot of people seem to think that i'm still in high school.

me too....what a bummer huh?

But anyways, yeah.... I don't really know what to do about it..I truly do blend in with the high school kids. [I'm 20, btw] Just the other day, I took my younger brother (16) to sign up for drivers-ed [since they don't do it in H.S anymore over here] and the man working there goes "Sim, there's a LITTLE GIRL here wanting to drive" I looked around, and it was only my brother and I, so yah he was talking about me. I had to tell him that I already have my license, I'm not a little girl and I'm actually here for my brother! he didn't believe me until I showed him my ID, but he said it was my sisters, I'm like wtf, how would you know..haha yahh....hmm I, too, was dressing...just casually..I'll just tell you, what I tell myself, dress how ever you feel!! heh

I will be 31 next month and I have an 11 yr old daughter that people always mistake for my little sister. I only where adult clothing for work. I like different fashion trends and who cares what anyone else thinks. smile.gif

who cares? wear what you want to wear.
just don't wear anything with your boobies hanging out or shorts/skirts that ride up your crack, and you'll be fine.

it's not like you HAVE to shop somewhere based on your age. rolleyes.gif
ZiGeNX77
Yeah, wear what you want but also keep in mind how you dress really does force people to judge you. If you dress skanky, you're asking for people to treat you differently. If you dress professional, it is only natural for people to treat you more respectively.

A girl at my school dresses in really interesting perky happy clothes like horizontal striped stockings/leggings, bright colors, funky hair, and this bright green frog backpack. I think it is cool and fun, and in fact she is really respectful, but others may think the girl is really immature.

I think geography also plays a big factor. Here where I live in the West Coast, we can get away with things like that. Californians are more laid back and used to informal wear.

you're still young too, and there are some pretty young parents. I keep telling the clueless that 'youth' doesn't stop at 18 or whatever. -.- besides, we know people in their 30's and 40's (plus) are way younger than they were when our parents were that age. 'Age' is only the number of years since you had a womb of your own anyway (unless you're a twin), nothing more. It doesn't say who or what we are.

not to pick fights, but this is exactly the reason why i have issues with people from california.

how is california more laid back than other places? and what do you consider "informal wear"?
i mean, it's not like people in other states never wear jeans, or sandals or whatever.

if we're talking about school, there is no dress code. heck, even in the freezing cold michigan winters you can find girls wearing short skirts and uggs, shivering their way to class through the snow...
Mr Boo Boo
is there suppose to be a way that you dress when you get older? for me as long as it comfortable to wear than i will wear it
PaNgIeE
I dress my age, at least I think I do. I don't do the mini skirt, the booty shorts, or whatso. When I go out I will dress nice -- jeans, dress pants, and a nice shirt. When I'm at work, I'm professional. I try not to reveal too much and make sure that whatever I wear is fitting me. I think most ppl who know me know that I dress my age. smile.gif

ummm....yeah. im 21 and i shop the juniors section...mostly cause the sizes fit me better and it fits my tastes better. doesnt really matter since i get mistaken as a teenager anyways. i could care less.

You're right, I really do find that I have to be mindful of that.
Just the other day, while trying on some clothes in a store dressing room, some nosy little kid spied me from under the door, laughed and exclaimed "haha, you're like a little baby".
And I'm like, "Hello?! These are adult diapers, thank you!" dry.gif
