I haven't seen a poker thread, so I thought I would start one. Home games are big in college and I got into poker 2 years ago because I felt left out when my friends would play and I didn't know how. My favorite players are Allen Cunningham, Chris Ferguson (UCLA students at one point), Daniel Negreanu, and of course Scotty Nguyen.

Texas Hold 'Em. I was seriously addicted to that game 2 years ago. But yeah, it takes a while to get the hang of the game...but when you do...aw man..it's over. But I'm too scared to play in the casino. Those guys way too smart for me.

I could have sworn there was a poker thread somewhere around here, I remember posting on it. Anyway though, I don't think any of the poker variations be it Texas, Omaha, Stud, Triple Draw are all that hard to learn. I've done well in various tournies online and in casinos. Just have to make sure you can control your emotions.

Definitely. Steam control is really important. You have to learn to take a bad beat from time to time as it is a test to how strong your psyche is. That's poker. There is so much strategy in the game. You got to take into account betting patterns, player tendancies, pot odds, statistics, and etc. Players can get lucky sometimes, but in the end the good players end up with the profit. Lately, I've been winning with hands that are dominated, but losing with hands that dominate. I play on UltimateBet and built up a huge bankroll, but online poker can be very boring because I honestly don't enjoy taking money from strangers. Friends, on the other hand, is a different story because it's usually small stakes and I can rub it in their faces if I win. I like talking while playing and home games are definitely the best.

How good is the action there?

Full Tilt has a lot of action, depending on which game you play and which stakes. I'm a low NL HE player on FTP, but I'm mainly a live cash game person.

Lately, I've called poker a prostitute, because the river keeps on sucking out on me. tongue.gif
paeker
ehh i've been playing poker for about 5-6 years...had my share of bad beats and my share of sucking out on ppl tongue.gif...my user name on fulltilt is paeker so if u see me online...lets playyyy

So I accidentally deposited $50 into my online poker account (yes, you can accidentally deposit money into a poker account. To save face, I'm not going to indulge in how).

Thus far, I'm a little less than $2 in the hole. I've had some brutal beats. Ok, it may not all be brutal, but I will say that I've had the best of things plenty of times, and I could easily be $50 up. I've been able to fight my way through a lot of SnGs, and God almighty.. I've been able to dig deep to go past my stubbornness and move down $.15-$.30.

That's probably the toughest poker decision I've ever made, but geez.. I can't keep buying into $.25-$.50 with just $25. With just $25 in those games, you really have to play tight and hope to double up. There's just no deep stack involved. At least with $.15-$.30, I can play my game without having to worry about getting my bankroll hit hard with a few measly floating or explorative calls.

I think the biggest reason why it was a tough decision for me was because I've been playing $.25-$.50 for years with the initial buy-in being at $20. It hasn't occurred to me until now that the buy-in of $20 at those stakes is extremely low. I also keep forgetting that during those games, I really don't make plays or put myself in situations to make good decisions until I hit $40-$50 mark, to which it is easier to open up my game instead of waiting for top hands. Of course, I have to play a full table, because there is just too much action at a short-handed table for $20 to play.

All in all, it really sucks to go back down to $.15-$.30. It really is amateur stakes, and (this will come across as completely arrogant) I'm definitely not an amateur player. I guess what I really have to do is build my bankroll until where I can play those kind of stakes.

I've actually recently decided to stick with SnGs and $.15-$.30. When I played $20 at $.25-$50, I lost it because I was unable to make any decisions besides going all in (and getting sucked out on). I didn't play the table poorly, but I just couldn't play the table without a premium hand. Since I decided to play anal tight at SnGs and stick to $.15-$30, I'm up $20 (which makes me close to even). I guess I need to stick to my gameplan longer and hope that there is less variance in the long run.

Look out for me at the $.25-$.50 games by next week! tongue.gif

So what blinds have you guys been playing? How long have you been playing, either online or on the table?

20$ isn't enough for .25-.50 imo. I think you need about $50 and I always look at the chip amounts at the table so I know I can't be pushed around. When I have money in my account I usually do 10-50$ heads up, 20-120$ sit n goes, random tournaments and if I want to do ring games I usually goto the .25/.50, 1/2 or 2/4 tables.

I think the best way to go is to buy the max in every table that you can. If losing all of the money you put in is going to hit your bankroll hard, then you need to move down.

That's like telling a former all-star short-stop to go back to the minors and redevelop his game. It may be necessary, but it isn't an easy thing to do.

Yeah .. I usually try to bring the max, that way it's easy to make a ton. You have to know your own sokill level too ( I hate playing on the real low level entry/stake games since people make dumb plays all the time and I seem to get more bad beats there than in the higher stakes). One way to look at it, I believe this is from Super System 2, if you just keep moving up in stakes as you make mroe you're only bound to lose. Since it'd just be like playing in a super long tournament. I prefer to stick at the 1/2 for ring games, although I'll switch to .25/.5, or .5/1 or 2/4 it just depends on the mood.
