So, who else is in this boat?

My family has 2 vehicles currently, however my dad has full use of the one and my mom and I sort of work out a deal with the other (by work out a deal I mean I use it if she has nothing planned, haha). Anyway, with no real mode of transportation things are a bit difficult for travel to and from a job which would supply me with a steady income to put towards... yes, a car. As it is, I have a horrid time working the schedule to drive out just for classes alone.

I'm hoping there are others here who can commiserate with me here or offer some tips, haha. I can usually pick up some side jobs every now and then, but with no actual "job" job, I don't feel as comfortable with my means of income as some of my friends. Agh sleep.gif

Sorry to go on, but this is like .... AGH. I'm hoping I'm not the only one going through this.
YUNA!
Find a job where the boss buys his/her employee cars, like mine does!

Too bad I don't have a full liscence to enjoy this little benefit@@"
HERMIT
Acquaint yourself with your local mass transit system. You'll just have to tough it out using this mode of transportation until you are able to afford buying your own car. Perhaps if you are lucky, whatever job you land might offer reimbursement for a monthly bus pass as part of your job benefits (kind of rare, but some places do).

I can't think of any other suitable alternative short of just relying on a bike to get around or carpooling. Instead of a car, maybe a moped is a cheaper compromise that your folks might be able to help pay for up front and then you pay them back.
The Mad Korean
So, you're saying there are no buses or taxis where you live?

That's a tough situation that you're in, but remember that buying a car is no joke. It's tremendous responsibility that can empty your wallet in no time if you don't have solid income.

I'd recommend carpool.
Pogichinoy
Ask your parents to buy you a car?
yib
get a motorcycle. or moped.
itrayya
first, i hope you find a job.
any job, that gives you a little cash to save up.

and if it is possible, maybe buy a car,
and slowly pay that off.

cause if you are in desparate need of a car,
even that possiblity is possible.

i know it sucks. cause i see my other brother like that,
but my parents tried and did get them cars.
so... something is possible. even in your case.

good luck to you.
at least you have your ma's car.
bus. taxi. bike. those aint bad too.
take care.
Faa
Bus, train, walk.
You do realise that there are plenty of jobs that don't require you to have a car?
I don't even drive and I've never had the need to.
Aziraphale
Yeah, taking public transport is really not that bad. I don't drive either and don't have a car, but I get on just fine. Worry about buying a car after you've found a stable job. Surely you'd want your finances in order before you splurge on something as expensive as a car.
chula
if you don't have a steady income yet ... stick to mass transportation for now or work out a better arrangement with your parents on using the car.

buying and owning a car is expensive.
tommy96814
goku's instant transmission! one can only hope for this as a car substitute!
del32
I didnt get my own car until I was 23, and yeah, been there, waiting for bus isnt always fun sad.gif
Cheri.B*
Ah, I am having the same problem as you also sad.gif
It is hard to get around around here without a car because the time bus/bart (subway) offers are not that convenient.
I either take the public transportation home or have a friend or family who takes me home. smile.gif
I just tried to match my school schedule around the same time as my parents working time, so on the way to their work, they would drop me off to school.
You should'nt get a car if you do not feel ready because having a car is not cheap. You have to pay for insurance, pas, and other things the car needs.
Maybe you can find a job around your school to save up and when you feel ready to buy a car, then go for it.
It saves time and money for you that way.

my first job i just walked to it everyday o_O

i have a car now but i just don't have a job happy.gif

I haven't had a car for a while now... my old car was totaled in an accident a couple of winters ago (not my fault). So since then I have just relied on public transportation and friends. The public transportation system is pretty reliable and I can get to almost all the places I want to get to-- it's just that it takes way more time than driving there with a car. Also, the trains and buses stop running at around midnight so if I want to stay out later than that I have to either stay with a friend or have someone drive me home.

Anyhow... you're lucky you can have the car at least some of time. I never drive anymore. I used to be awesome at parallel parking and now I suck from lack of practice. sleep.gif

I was pretty lucky being the oldest kid in my family. I inherited my dad's hand-me-down as my first car. I think i was only 18-years-old at the time. I've had a car ever since *knock on wood*.

So yea, sorry i cannot commiserate.
Nycutie182
I'm 22 and I don't even have my license :\ I take the bus to school & work and have been for years. Luckily the public transportation isn't *too* bad where I live.
deportedkorean
almost 21 but no car...

...i used to have one back home (on a different island) but my parents sold it.

...it sucks. But I have my boyfriend to drive me around (but not always)...i have to walk for 30 minutes to get to my classes. I would get my own car but our apt only comes with one parking stall (and my boyfriend parks in it of course).

word.

me neither.. i can't be bothered.

i love taking the bus. it gives me time to think/listen to music/read/people watch.
vinylswing
23, no car. I work in midtown so taking the train to work would be more convenient because of heavy traffic and limited parking space. Besides, my employer pays for all my transportation expenses.
van * yuriko
i live in San Francisco. i have NO WHERE to park a car anyway. plus, $45 a month for a bus pass that takes me anywhere is better than paying $3.40+ a gallon for gas.

the only thing i hate about not having a car, your transportation is limited after hours. *sigh
marmar
LOL..my family get on my case all the time about having no car..really it's not the having no car an issue cause my family has tons of cars to give really..it's the "no license" .n. not knowing how to really drive that is an issue with me.
I'm 21 .n. I don't know how to drive really. I know how to park, go forward .n. back but other than that I have zero experience...lol

It's sad cause my younger sister who is 18 knew how to drive when she was 13/14, but me nope...LOL

So I get rides frm my dad, to get dropped off at work or I take the bus..
koneee
the bus is great for transportation, especially since the gas prices are rising.
I'm getting really tired of driving my roommate around because she doesnt have a car, and she hasn't been even paying me for gas -____- so make use of the buses they are great!
709394
I actually PREFER not having a car. Well, I live in Berkeley and work in SF, so public transportation is totally ...convenient for me, using the train system and all.

Driving here sucks ass.
allycat415
well i rely on my dad to drive me work every week. (i only work once a week)
and the rest like school and stuff i take public transportation. i mean seriously u can always find bus that takes u where u wanna go just as long as u know the routes here. so i dont really need a car now.... again i say for now. then again gas prices are out of whack lol.
M ♡
Well, I'm lucky. My dad owns a garage so yeah he gave me a car to drive.
Although it's a tiny winy car, I'm thankful it's actually driving me to some places! o_o
But seriously, you should get a job first because the bills will ring your bell. xD

move to NYC.

i have my license but i currently do not have a car. luckily, i can take the bus or walk to work.
however, it is a pain because i have to take time out of my day to wait for the bus.
also, its a hassle if it rains, i have to carry stuff, buying groceries.
sometimes, i feel like i am missing out and not doing as much because i dont have a car.
the only positive things about me not having a car are that i am not spending money on car payment, insurance, gas, parking, upkeep.
distrust
well... i don't actually own the car, but it's our family car. i don't need a car anyway, i work at home. happy.gif
xxctxx
I got my license nearly two years ago...no car yet!
I just can't afford one at the mo' being a poor student and all...
Chisame
How about "over 20 and no driver's license crew." ^___^;;

Yeah, by default I fall under being over 20 and not having a car. I actually know someone who doesn't have his license yet, but owns a car. He has his friends drive him around and borrow the car from him.

That doesn't make any sense. How does he get insurance if he doesn't even have a license?

I should've stated that I don't think he paid for insurance himself (I don't know who got the insurance for him cos his mum has lived out of state for years and never visits), he only paid hard cash for the car itself. wink.gif
thislove
I actually go to college with my sister so she takes me everywhere most of the time. I guess tat's the reason why my parents didn't really get me a car.
Gingging8
Maybe find a job oncampus so you can work inbetween classes, or find a job that you can work from home.. that way you can start saving up for a car if public transportation where you live isn't an option.
suzic87
I use to but my bros got it now Loser! but I prefer not to have one at the mo as its soooo expensive to run these days, got to pay for car itself, maintenance, PETROL, tax, insurance etc... and as a student I got better things to spend my cash on lol
Lana
I dont have a car because i dont want one. I cant drive to save my life. If you have no income, you have no car. Plain and simple. Get a job, then see what happens.
suu
I don't have a car too and I prefer mass transportation whereby I can relax, do some reading or sleeping smile.gif
hun_wun_gal
i'm over 20, family has 2 cars can drive but i don't ._.

more ;like i dun feel the need to since everywhere i go it's hard to find spaces n running a car is expensive -.-
Ringo.
I don't drive either. It really sucks because my boyfriend has to pick me up and drive me everywhere, and I feel bad for him D: Or my parents would drive me to work, school, etc.

I actually do have my license, and there's a car that I can use but my parents won't let me drive cause they think I'm not a strong driver. Driving gives me headaches. ~___~
BloodPrincessShiroto
I actually just sold my car before I started college. I moved far away from home and since my car would only be used 6 weeks each year it wasn't worth it. I just either walk everywhere or take the bus.
trungiie
20, no car..we only have 2 cars
my dad works and my mom just drives all over town all day
>_>
whit3rabbit
story of my life for me.. it's not fun. i want to be as independent as possible. without a car, i feel crippled at times sad.gif
trungiie
OMGGGG..dmv keeps failing me on the parallel parking! i think its bc i practiced it too much. it used to be so perfect..i took the test again today and failed (it was ok but i just had to be ANAL and back up a little more)

==;

so no car until i pass this dumb thing and get my license *sobs*
Saint of Swords
Im still learning from my dad but I keep pressing the brakes and gas pedal at the same time for a reason. lol

lol.. how do you press both at the same time?
i think i just have bad luck
i hate having to wake up super early and wait in the cold to get in line
at first i was horrified of driving (especially down bellaire--all you houstonians know what i mean) but i got used to it after a few drives
sunshine4ever
i am in the same boat...i have no car for the past 1 week also..my car broke right on new year's day (ain't it fun). and i finally decided that it's time to get a new one. at least now that i can work, i have no problem with getting a new one. anyway, i'm still looking for a new used car but i have been working so can't wait to see cars later tonight as well as tomorrow. my bro-in-law will be helping to see the car/s, but the thing is, it's raining so hard outside >__< the car problem had been taking up a lot of my time..and i need to study for an exam next week! life is so stressful without a car! i couldn't go any where that i really wish to go.
trungiie
woo! just passed the exam this morning...now what car will i get?
herovueboi
I'm 23 and I own 4 cars, but only 3 of them run. I had cars sitting around doing nothing and my cousin needed a car and I didn't want to keep dropping him off so I just let him use one of my cars. He just gives me money for insurance and like $10 a month for miles. I don't really mind at all, hes a really good cousin of mines.

Oh and in many situations, public transportation works out the best. When I was younger, I had to take a road trip down town and my parents decided against me taking it so I had to take up public transportation. I was so scared, but after a whole summer of that, I got used to it and never had a problem. Though sometimes I would miss my bus and walk 7 miles downtown...those were the good old days.
