I did pretty well last year compare to the year before. Mainly because I put 15% of my paycheck in the company stock purchase plan. And the stock price went up about 45% since I bought them

. But I had less than $1000 in my bank account at the end of the year ... The only way for me to save money is to put it in a place where I can't touch them

nada, I think I even had deficit.
spent lots of $$$ for our wedding expenses, bought a house, and then furnitures and other crap.
I didn't have a good paying job. This year is better though.

I spent $ more than I save, especially with the holidays tat past. I can seems to use up my money just knowing I still have some left in my account. So, last yr saved alittle but spent alot so overall didn't save at all.

Wow, according to this thread, I am the most frugal person on Soompi.

I actually have a few grand saved up from my internship, but now I'm going back to classes, I'm unsure of how long it'll last me. If I can get a bartending job to work nights on, perhaps my savings can increase. Otherwise, I'll probably slowly, but surely, be spending my savings in the next 8 months.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one here who didn't save their money too well.
I had/have less than $1000 in my bank account. College expenses, along with summer vacations, piano lessons, driving lessons, and then nonstop shopping along with having a bf and personal spendings here and there just totally drained it. Not to mention buying books and paying credit card/phone bills. Eek.

I didn't save any money. I've got loads of student loans to still pay off, plus credit card bills and rent, utilities, etc. This year I moved back home so though I'm saving money on living expenses, the extra money goes towards paying off the loans and also some shopping here and there. I'm starting a new job soon so I'll be getting paid more. Hopefully I can save up this year!

hmm am i one of the raritys here then? I work two jobs, ones a full time and the other i work once a week. My full time job I started in July 07 so save pretty much most of it (16 grandish AUD) and my part time work I spend all that on petrol and going out. I'm forcing myself to save as much as possible as I've bought an apartment (which will commence building soon) so will need to start repaying it once it's finished.

I get about $6500/semester from my school for living expenses as part of my scholarship, and of that I managed to save somewhere around $1700. Planning to save about that much this semester to go towards a trip to Europe. So after the summer my grand savings will be pretty grim.

I don't know how much exactly but it sounds like more than most. haha I usually save my bonus and most of my tax refund. Although I have automatic savings I end up dipping into it way more than I should.

Just as a general principle, you shouldn't invest heavily in the company that employs you (max 10% of your total investments, probably much less, 5% or under even), unless you are a founder or officer, and even then... Remember what happened at Enron!
Mutual funds are the way to go! Open up a self-directed Roth IRA and dump your money into that (up to $5000 a year). Pick a company like Vanguard or T.Rowe Price, as they have superb reputations and very low fees for the mutual funds.

Try to arrange to have 10% of every pay check automatically deposited into a mutual fund. If you never see the money, you can't spend it! As long as your spending is not on necessities like food and rent, you'll find a way to adjust to the reduced cash flow, and will be able to save up a lot of money for the future without even thinking about it.

Wow, you are good! That is great future saving. Actually, I just started a new job and the company offers mutual fund as well as 401K... I've talked to a few of my relatives but feel like being pulled in multiple directions. If it's not too personal, can you explain your reason for putting so much into mutual funds? Is it something you can gain money as well as lose money? And how long must you have it for before you can use it w/o penalty? ^^;;
Edit: Oh.. I just saw the mutual fund topic ^^;;; Aiya...

well...i had all that money in cd account for b of a. but the interest rate was low and i wanted to take some risks in investing because i'm at a point in my life where losing this money won't hurt that much.
my friend is a broker for ameritrade, and he advised me that i should invest on mutual funds. so he just put my money where he saw fit.
from what i heard, u have to wait at least 2 years before pulling out. but i wouldn't advise you to pull out so early. if u're planning on pulling out early, just invest on money market savings account where you don't get penalized and the interest rate is higher than standard bank's cd accounts.
ps. stock market is very weak right now. u can buy for very cheap. however, it is risky.

I save a lot but I dont think I saved anything if that makes sense as I am currently a final yr student and well that means paying off my ENORMOUS debt once I graduate. on top of that other expenses need paying for.
plus last yr I didnt have a job (except for a christmas temp job for 3 weeks) so I didnt save anything. all i did was move some of my loan to a high interest bank and stuff so i could earn extra money through my loan!
in addition not having a job but having driving lessons and tests aint a good combi, the amount i spent on driving is ridiculous!!
