Full Version: What Have You Done To Get Into College?

What do you guys think you should/still need to do to get into your college of choice? Which college is it?
What are you doing to prepare for college?
Are you worried?

I think maybe I should start doing more clubs. So far I've only done one (and track and cross country as sports), but I'm only a Frosh. @_____@
I'm hoping to get into UPenn, Columbia, or Yale, but I doubt they're going to accept anyone who's just smart since they look for well rounded people.

I think maybe for the next few years I'll do:
- G&T
- Outdoors Club
- International Club
- Art Club
- Environmental Club

I was planning on joining them this year, but I decided to work on my homework before cross country practice started instead...

Hmmm... well colleges are looking for well rounded college classes. So while well rounded kids may fit into that... they're looking for exceptional kids. Whether they be insane violinists, insane scientists, insane athlete etc.

Well the things I do are fairly short.
-Music (Musical, Piano, Violin)
-Track (Track and Weightlifting)
-Darfur Activism (Friends and I just do fundraising)
-Student Leadership (like Student Gov't, NHS etc.)
-Volunteering

I mean you don't have to do a lot of things... just do what you like best and you'll find good things from that ^^

Mmm... I think I just need to work hard on the things I do and become devoted to those even more so than I am now.

The colleges I want to go to are very brand name ish colleges. Georgetown, U of Chicago, NYU, Columbia.

I am worried... a lot too actually =P, but I figure if I work hard... Life will guide me in a decent path. I have set goals, but I realize they will probably change. Who knows maybe staying here in MN and going to the U of Minnesota is the best thing I can do. We'll see as time goes on ^^

^ how are math classes extracurriculars? o____o isn't the school newspaper a class too? (journalism, or something)

does volunteering fall under extracurriculars too? b/c i've done a bunch of random mini things.
PDURRR
^some schools (like my hs. newspaper was an afterschool thing and it was a club so you had to try out for it..., they had a 7th period for it but they cut it because of budget cuts or something)

i did so much volunteering but it's such a waste because i go to a community college.loll
waking up early for nothing! except for tacky free tshirts and pens lol.

i was also in the amdt-2 yrs
and a volunteer service club-1yr..well technically half a year.

ohrenjii-it definately isn't too late. i didn't start trying out for clubs till the end of my soph year sweatingbullets.gif
chinese tears <3
I only did a few clubs and volunteer stuff. For clubs, it's best to be an officer for it to really make a difference on your application. Someone told me that colleges only care if you're an officer of that club. I suppose if you've been in it for 4 years that is something too. But yeah... they love well-rounded people. I would say get a job or something too.. that looks really good especially if you can balance it with school well.

i just had to pass the TEE to get into my uni. >_>
but to get in my course.. well, in order to do things, i have to learn senior first aid, get all these working checks done and get immunisations done. >_> i also gotta do some clinical hours and volunteering stuff.

I take classes outside of school.
Newspaper isn't a class. It's afterschool. It takes up SO much time if you're an editor, but I'm only an associate.

I think you'll be fine if you join a few clubs and stick with them.
Or maybe even start a club on your own...? I was thinking about doing that, but I don't have any ideas.
I'm planning on using my summer to get a few jobs and maybe clean up a few schools. @____@
It's quick community service and I didn't mind doing it last summer.

Do good in school grade-wise

Be somewhat a teacher's pet / become close with teachers for GOOD TEACHER RECOMMENDATION letters. ^^ always a plus....and close with other teachers/supervisors, etc

Join clubs/be involve/volunteer. Join a sport team!!

I had a quite a busy HS year.
busagiboo
For a supplementary I had to do for a university, I needed to do a lot of extracurriculars: music, arts, sports, volunteering.

Stuff I've done over the four years:
-Girls' Flag Football team
-Badminton team
-Curling team
-Concert Band
-Wind Ensemble
-Concert Choir
-Music Council
-SAC as Junior and Senior Treasurer
-Youth Charity Association
-Salsa Club
-Chinese Students' Association
-Literary Association
-Business Club (anyone heard of DECA?)
-Latin Club

I also wrote a lot of those Waterloo math contests, accounting contests, volunteered at summer camps and my local library, went on the Shad Valley program.

Also very important to stay on your teachers' good sides so you can get really good recommendation letters!

So, it's crucial to be very involved inside and outside of your school!

I did nothing...

Community Service at Evergreen Nursing Home (100 hours) <-- PUHA! I have so little hours dry.gif
Teacher's Aid at Saint Thomas Korean Catholic Center (50 hours) <-- PUHA! Even less hours!
American Red Cross - Historian
Alzheimer's Association - Public Relations
Support Our Soldiers - Secretary
Pause for Paws - Member
Cross Country (throughout High School)
Track (until Sophmore year)

And I'm planning to get a job Senior year, but that's not for college. It's 'cause I want the moolah~ wink.gif
My extra curriculars list is actually pretty pathetic compared to other ambitious people. There's this girl at my school who balances ASB, President of 10000000 clubs, Varsity Tennis, and Newspaper with straight A's. She's seriously amazing. (I WANT HER BRAIN AND STAMINA!)
HERinsinuation
- Piano teacher for 2 years (04-06)
- Hospital Volunteer - Maternity ward + Main office duties, escorting visitors/patients (06-07)
- Volunteer at Nursing Home - General duties (05-07)
- Volunteer for the Van Hanh Buddhist Association - Archive handler + loan system supervisor, Events organizer (05-08)
- Head of the peer tutoring program at school (06-present)
- Tutoring at Community Centre (06)
- Getting experience at an Optometry clinic, Secretarial work, autorefractor operation...etc (07-present)

You're right that schools mainly want well-rounded students though. I had several interviews two months ago, and most of them asked me plenty of questions not only regarding clinical knowledge, but to get a better look at your social life and personality. They don't want people who will simply study and stay locked up in their rooms - they're looking for leaders, someone who will contribute to the university throughout their studies and give back something valuable to society. Many universities will be eager to give you a lower offer if they see that you have an excellent extra-curricular history. I ended up getting an unconditional offer from my choice university (University of Manchester), and surprisingly low conditional offers (required overall average of 80%/ABB/AAB) from my remaining 5 - well for the exception of one, but the admission tutor from that particular school didn't seem to like me lol. Also, if you're writing a personal statement, remember to mention your extra-curricular activities as much as possible and how you have matured and grown from your experiences, and how they've influenced your decision to pursue your chosen profession etc....

Good luck =)
