Sorry if this topic was posted before..
I looked back a few pages and i didn't find any similar topics so i decided to start one.
Feel free to close it down if necessary.

I got into a car accident today T___T
I was driving and doing some "deep thinking" at the same time and the car in front of me suddenly stopped. I guess either i have very slow reflexes or i was too occupied in my thinking that i ended up rearing that car. I braked but the distance was just too close so i had no choice but to hit since cars were coming from both sides next to me. What surprised me was that the other person's rear only got minor scratches and a slight dent whereas my car got totally smashed in tears.gif .

Up until now, i still can't grasp what happened.
I can't tell if I'm dreaming or not...(i guess i'm not since i'm here ranting about it on soompi)
I'm currently waiting for my insurance company to call me back...i hope my insurance won't spike too bad.. unsure.gif

So when was your first accident (if ever) ? What happened? How did you feel?
aznfishyfart
the front is meant to crush in so you wont get hurt as much
i remember my friend rearended someone and she got so pissed even though there was a couple scratches on her already beat up car (we couldn't tell what had been there before haha)
my friended ended up needing a new hood, bumper, grille, headlight lol

i have yet to be in an accident in my own car =)

The day (2001) before I went off to college. A lady in a Ford Taurus going 45-60 mph decides to not look that me and my 1988 Honda Civic was in front of her waiting on traffic. Mind you, I didn't have airbags and my teenage stupidity is that I didn't wear a seat-belt. I felt my forehead hit the steering wheel pretty good. Walked away with no injuries, my car, gone.

I never got into an accident and I hope it stays this way. mellow.gif

at age 16. i rear ended some old lady who tried to make money off the accident. i got a dented hood/bumper and nothing happened to her car. i took pictures and my friend secretly videotaped the whole thing while we exhanged insurance info. about two weeks later... i get a call from my insurance company about her claim. turns out... she went home and banged up her rear (or had another accident) and tried to used our accident to fix it. lets just say i got my car fixed for free when it was my fault ph34r.gif

My first car accident, was a few years back. Driving too fast into a blind curve and wasn't able to turn sharp enough (a insanely sharp curve without any warning sign). I wasn't speeding (per limit), but i knew i should've been going so fast into a curve, sharp or not. Apparently there happened to be another car taking that turn as I went in... BAM!

I'll miss my Mazda 626

Recently my car has fallen victim to some kid's first accident... hey, i'm not at fault, I was at home eating dinner when this happened: Plus the kid was driving a brand new black Honda Civic, didn't even get the license plates on yet.

^^^ Goodbye poor Volvo... time to find another one. Sadly i'm buried in insurance hell and i'm fighting the guy's insurance company myself...

Sometime last year. It was a three lane road and I was in the middle lane when some lady in an SUV tries to go from the rightmost lane all the way to the leftmost lane. Hit the side of my car and the damage went all the way to the front bumper.

About a month or so after I got my car back from the shop, a teenager in a truck rear-ended me while I was stopped at a light.

When I was twelve. Me and my dad had a (guy trip) lol. Anyway, on our way home, we were stuck behind a horse, and when we tried to pass it he met a truck. We had to push the car aside us almost off the road to get in ourselves since he refused to break up : / Half our car got jammed, I broke a leg and 3 ribs.

When I was 3, I got hit by a car. It was a Jeep or something, I don't remember. I think I almost died cause my face was going blue. But then I didn't x)

i cant remember but way back when my lil bro got hit by a blonde lady (figures) who was driving wayyy to fast in a parking lot. cant remember exactly but it was either a 300zx she was driving or the latest corvette of the time. the worst two cars that i would never want to be hit by.

i heard when the airbag deploys it feels like a punch in the face.
kelvin6
In a normal accident, you will not feel the airbag, in fact you won't even know it went off until long after its fully deflated. Airbags work that quick and I know first hand. The first thing after it deploys is that you realize your not dead, but the whole cabin of the car is filled with grey smoke from the airbag. You look down and oh, it deployed tongue.gif . Sometimes the airbag (usually the passenger side one) can often shatter (or crack) the windshield due to its bursting force. My airbag deployment blew off the rear view mirror and sent it flying into the backseats...

In many cars you may also experience a airbag burn to part of your hands or wrists, because the hot air (from the airbag chemical reaction) needs to vent out quickly and apparently its directed at your wrists). When I had my accident, it burned marks onto my jacket, which was covering my wrist.

The most important thing to never do is obscure the airbag cover in anyway. If you put something like a emblem or something near the airbag cover (or even on it), that emblem will probably smack u in the face causing injury when the airbag fires. These things will become flying projectiles when the airbag breaks out. The reality about the airbag is that it doesn't fire and the cover acts like a flap to let it out, the airbag blows right through the plastic or vinyl, because its the quickest path for it to fully deploy in time.

Also if you do for some reason your car's airbag deploys and you repair the car, its also worth mentioning that you also need to replace the seatbelts (the ones being worn by the driver and passengers at the time of the accident), because the nylon stitches are designed to stretch (and warp) in such a sudden stop or accident so that it allows movement, rather than the seatbelt hurting you in the accident.

^ wow...i never knew airbags can be so dangerous..
i always thought of them as soft cushions

In a gas station, I was backing up my mom's minivan, hitting some object that was sticking out, cracking her right rear tail light. Nothing involving another auto tho.

well my first official accident was last year in Novmber-2007 i had epica-shivrolet the new one. when i had the accident it was 3 month of month after i bought it. it was foggy weather and wet roads so when the person driving in from my car suddenly press break i hit him from the back becassue it was crowded but no chance to avoid it but i tried to slow down.

intresting or the bad thing is that it cause an ccidenat to 5 other cars. everybody fine

happy news finally my car will be out tomorrow and i may buy new car soon.
BoAFriend
My first accident was my mom's ex-bf's (actually ex-fiance because he cheated on her while they were engaged) 2005 Cadillac STS. The garage that it's parked in is narrow, and the STS is pretty wide. On the side of our driveway we have this low brick retaining wall and backing up, things seemed okay, but then SCREEEEETCH! I was too much to the right and I ended up scraping up the back right side of the back bumper. -___-

Funny thing is all I got was being yelled @ for 3 mins and that was the end of it. My mom didn't seem to care too much after all because as you can tell from the relationship w/ the guy...

OH MY @$#$#$!#$!!!!!
My sister recently got a TL and she got in an accident today!
Her entire front bumper is scratched like crazy 'cause she ran into a fence. (Hit gas pedal instead of break).
I wonder how she's going to tell my dad...
She hasn't even had the car for a week ><!.

when i was 11. my cousin and my aunt were going on our vegas trip.
we rented a toyota corolla because my aunt didn't want to put so much milage on her car.
we weren't in vegas yet. we still had like 4 more hours left to go.
it was actually pretty funny. my aunt started singing and was moving her car left to right as a joke.
then she was singing but she wasn't playing around this time. the car moved left to right by itself.
and the tires were screeching and my aunt couldn't control the brakes.
later we crashed into the barb wires on the desert. we got stuck there for 20 minutes till a police came and helped us.
we got lifted by a tow truck back to barstow.
and got a different car. so it took us another 5 hours or so.

Oh thats kinda funny I recall reading ppl saying how that car was too nice for her as a beginners car. I guess that just shows u we werent making fun of her but is the truth. Most ppl who get their license get into some sorta accident in their 1st month. Me included as you see at the above post lol. Luckily it was an '88 Corolla for me and not a 30k+ car :X

Got into an accident the first week after I got my car.
Simply_M3
I rear ended someone on my 18th birthday LOL. The front bumper was pushed up a little and didn't align with the hood anymore, and a few scratches on it. Nothing big but maynnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn the guy that I hit was laughing at me. I WANTED TO BASH HIS FACE IN WITH AN UGLY STICK!

I remember I needed to change lanes and the guy in front of me just stopped outta nowhere and BAM! It completely caught me off guard I started to cry. I know such a typical reaction from a chick but I was terrified what my father was going to do to me! I mean my father's had me kneel on sea salt for hours before just for crossing the street when I wasn't supposed to!!

Yeah...HAHAHA

I did some 'investigating' into the kid who wrecked my car. Thanks to the police report and using the information provided this is what I found:

The kid had just turned 18 prior to the accident.

The kid just bought the car, as I found checking out his VIN on google, the car was still in dealer stock 10 days prior to the accident. Therefore I can assume he owned the car 10 days or less prior to causing the multicar accident.

One of the cars he hit belong to a neighbor who lived a few buildings down from where he lived.

The kid wasn't coming down the hill, he was backing out of his parking spot and claimed brake failure, when its obvious that he hit the gas instead of the brakes... if the brakes failed it should't have been able to take four cars out (because he was still at a slight angle when he backed out.

The kid only bought 30K in liability for property damage (I got the adjuster to disclose this), and the damages will exceed that limit. Meaning that as the owners (who don't have two-way) we can sue this kid as the insurance was bought by him and not his parents. I can sue him up to what he has in assets, which would be at least his car (since that as well was under his name).

This is what I recommend for you newer drivers: I don't recommend a nice new expensive (or even not expensive) car for the first timer as accidents will occur. Two, buy insurance with high coverage, because otherwise you run the risk of being sued or (if the parents put you under theirs) your parents get sued. But most of all, drive safely!

Its still frustrating for me, as more than a month has passed and I still haven't been able to get another car. I'm still talking to the kid's insurance company to get this settled... and its not fun. On top of that I will not get back the whole value of what I deserve, due this his under insurance, but is it worth suing him over it (the time and effort I have to put in)?

My smartie sister hit a fence. And because she doesn't want my dad to know about the car, she's paying for the damages to the car out of pocket. She says she doesn't know how much it's going to cost... but she also has to pay for the fence she ruined.
(Not just your normal neighborhood fence... automated fence for apartment complexes ><!)
She also told me that her car was STUCK in the fence, and a kind stranger pulled it out for her.

It looking a bit costly. =x

Everyone in my family except for her and my dad said it was too much for a beginner's car. (She can't even park properly...)
My dad keeps saying that he wants to buy me a tsx, but I really don't want to take it--especially after seeing what my sister did with her TL.
(I've been looking into this 2005 rsx that's listed for $17,798, but with price comparisons on similar cars, other rsx's, and the civic si-- I think I can get talk the dealer down to 13-15k.)

All of my sisters' insurance is under my dad's name, but I know we got high coverage for a low rate because my uncle's an Allstate agent. So far, my sister Trang's gotten into two accidents, but neither of them were her fault.
My sister Vi's going to pay for the damages to her car with her own money 'cause if she has to go through the insurance... my uncle will know, and he'll tell my dad.

=/ I've been following the accident with your car and can't help but be pissed for you. I hope it's all over soon!
je_amourx
Besides the fear of getting hurt, I think most people's fear is their parent's reaction! Lol Surprisingly, that wasn't my fear but rather my safety.

A commerical truck backed into my front; driven by a non-speaking english driver. I was speaking to their insurance about my case and this is what their insurance lady asked me, "Why isn't your insurance claiming this case? I mean you pay them money to do this." I'm like WTH!?! It was your insured's fault and why the heck would MY insurance be claiming this, how long have you worked in this business. I think she was trying to take advantage of me because of my age. Anyway, I hired a lawyer.
kelvin6
I think mentioned several times on this forum that having the insurance under your parents or someone elses name does bring some risks.

The main reason being if you hit someone's car or hit a pedestrian, they have all the right to sue the policy holder (which would also be the registered owner of the vehicle). The scary part is when the sue for millions of dollars of damages, injury or death. Meaning that if you lose the case, your parents or whoever the insurance is under (also registered owner) can be sued up to their net worth. This net worth would include the (assets) house that they own, their cars, their bank accounts, etc.

Now if the insurance was under your name, they can only sue you and not anyone else. Obviously I don't think most of our net worths are greater than our parents... usually much less. At least you won't have to worry about your parents getting affected by this issue. I'm not a parent but if I have kids, i'd make sure to buy them their own insurance and under their own name, so what they do can't screw me over.

supertammie
^ God that's scary... but he insists that it's under his name so it'll be cheaper. I'll make sure to buy my own insurance when I can.

just got into one recently. Tow truck drivers, i tell you..

if you wanna know the story, just add me on myspace. my last name is han

Actually the reason why that hood bends in that particular area is because its a safety feature. This feature allows the hood to bend up instead of getting ripped off the mounting bolts and decapitating you in the even of a accident. Otherwise i'd be dead in my first car accident (my old Mazda).

If and when you replace the hood, do NOT get aftermarket metal hoods. I found through my Volvo that these parts tend to be inferior in quality and materials. The metal feels thin and hollow compared to the stock parts. A used hood (after a repaint), would be a better choice.

and that'll give me about $1200 to play with, possibly more smile.gif
