I'm writing an essay for English 'On Being a Filipino-American,' (for obvious reasons) and part of my sources can be interview, or in this case, a survey. So...if you're Fil-Am (or any Asian-American really), can you please answer these questions? They may seem random and not very well-thought out, but...it'll help me a lot.

1. What do you think is the general stereotype for Asians (or Filipinos specifically)?

2. What generation Fil-Am are you? (first-generation, second-generation, etc.)

3. What Filipino dialect do you and your family speak?

4. If you regularly visit/visited a few times, did you feel like you belonged?

5. Are you religious?

6. Do you sometimes wish you were another ethnicity? (...)

7. Are you and your family close in relationship?

8. What is your career choice?

Thanks

1. What do you think is the general stereotype for Asians (or Filipinos specifically)? Darker skin means more lower-class.

2. What generation Fil-Am are you? (first-generation, second-generation, etc.) First-generation

3. What Filipino dialect do you and your family speak? Tagalog, but my dad can speak some Bisayan too.

4. If you regularly visit/visited a few times, did you feel like you belonged? Yes and no. My cousins there didn't treat me differently, but there's the fact that my speaking isn't always... on par.

5. Are you religious? Yes, I'm Roman Catholic.

6. Do you sometimes wish you were another ethnicity? No. While I have interests in other cultures (that's kind of why I joined soompi), I think Filipinos have their own culture that sets them apart in good ways.

7. Are you and your family close in relationship? Yes!

8. What is your career choice? I'm only a junior, but I'm thinking of nursing. Sounds like the typical choice for a Filipino...
But I would get sick a lot when I was younger [and now], and the nurses who took care of me were nice, so I don't mind!

1. What do you think is the general stereotype for Asians (or Filipinos specifically)?
The general stereotype for Asians always starts with the accents. The way words are pronounced because english is not their first language or the language they particularly use all the time is always used as a stereotype. In a lighter note, I've always seen that the Asian stereotype is the hardworking individual. That is why you see lots of Asians, particularly Filipinos, doing the hard working jobs such as the military, custodians, etc (any blue-collar jobs).

2. What generation Fil-Am are you? (first-generation, second-generation, etc.)
First generation (born in the Philippines), but not fluent in tagalog.

3. What Filipino dialect do you and your family speak?
Tagalog

4. If you regularly visit/visited a few times, did you feel like you belonged?
I feel like I belonged because I feel close to my culture. I always learn something every time I go back to the Philippines.

5. Are you religious?
To a certain extent. i was raised Christian but I don't practice/go to church that much.

6. Do you sometimes wish you were another ethnicity? (...)
Not really. I like learning the cultures of other ethnicities, but I never really wished I was another ethnicity.

7. Are you and your family close in relationship?
Yes, very much so. I have friends who talk crap about their parents when they get into fights, but I never had a situation like that. I feel much more closer to my family now that I'm older since you start to realize that all the hardships were for your own good.

8. What is your career choice?
I'm a junior majoring in Industrial Engineering, but I have no idea yet. I have many dreams and I don't think I can settle with one thing.

1. What do you think is the general stereotype for Asians (or Filipinos specifically)? Hardworking and I agree with july-eighth, darker skin means a lower class.

2. What generation Fil-Am are you? (first-generation, second-generation, etc.) There’s ambiguity about this expression, but I’ll say first-generation for your survey!

3. What Filipino dialect do you and your family speak? Tagalog, Ibanag, Ilocano

4. If you regularly visit/visited a few times, did you feel like you belonged? With my family yes, but as I wandered about like a tourist not really, I actually felt like a stranger. I mean, I know my history and all, but I just felt like I did not fit in.

5. Are you religious? Yes.

6. Do you sometimes wish you were another ethnicity? (...) No, I enjoy many people’s cultures and I like learning about them because I like to be open-minded and it is very interesting, but no I do not wish that I were another ethnicity.

7. Are you and your family close in relationship? Very close.

8. What is your career choice? I have three major things going for me, ballet, writing, or being in the medical field serving America.

P.S. Do I qualify? I am only part Filipino…
