k so basically i've only driven two manual cars before. anyway in one manual car, if the hill isn't really steep, i usually just use the clutch to prevent the car from rolling back by lifting it just below the friction point. however, on a different manual car i drove, using the clutch alone won't stop it from rolling back and it requires the accelerator to keep it from rolling. my question is, do most manual cars only use the clutch alone??
sorry for the stupid question, but i don't exactly have another manual car to play around with.

What cars were you driving? I have to gas it a little to stay in place or I bog down in the Teg.
It's better not to let the clutch hold you, you wear down your clutch faster.

pull the E-brake , then when u start just put in gear , gaz a lil ,then release the clutch slowly and then release the e-brake, that's how i start on all the manual cars.

as a beginner, yea, use the e-brake method. once you get use to it, you won't need the e-brake or clutch. keep the brake pedal on the floor until it's time to use the accelerator.

i was driving around an 01/02 corolla and a 96 hyundai excel. ah, i never thought about wearing down the clutch

guess i'll follow wat most of u guys recommend of using the e-brake all the time. thanks for the answers.

(Sorry to butt in here guys.. )
Don't you use the hand-brake, to stop roll-back?
Normally I let go of the clutch slowly, feel for the friction point, let go of the hand-brake, hit the gas a bit and you'll just go forward.

Yeah, don't use clutch to stop your car from rolling because you're just wearing it out. Handbrake is usually unnecessary too, unless the car behind you is hugging your bumper.

i've never used the handbrakes, even on steep hills when i was learning. for some reason it confused the crap out me how to do it, so i just release brake, push in clutch, then into gear and gas it a bit to not bog, and i get moving.

i still use the ebrake if its a really steep incline just in case

haha, theres usually not enough room to not use the handbrake on the steep hills on certain roads. btw, when u guys say clutch and handbrake are both unnecessary, i'm assuming u mean theres enough room for just a little roll back before taking off in first gear??
oh, one thing annoying about using handbrakes in australia is at round-abouts with a slope. it just moves to quickly to bother with a handbrake.

using the clutch to hold ur car in place is a bad idea....
wears the clutch out like everyone said....also i dont have patience to hold my foot in that position for more than 10 seconds lol...
just hold the brake...then when ur ready to go just engage in gear and takeoff lol.

Yah same here..never once did I use the e-brake for steep hills, ever. Been driving stick for 6yrs now.

^damn, i wish i could do that

so wait, basically u just do the process quickly so theres hardly any rollback, or there was enough room for u guys to rollback a bit??

I usually give it a bit of gas before disengaging the clutch

i just put one foot on the clutch and one on the brake, then when its time to go move foot from brake over to gas.

I think cars with more power/torque might be more capable of moving without initially stepping on the gas. That is what you are asking right? Well I am not sure, I am just assuming. I have an Integra and it doesn't have much power so I have to gas it quick. I don't drive on hills much so I use the ebrake method... a more sure way not to roll backwards.
