The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) is a tuition-based program. The average tuition is $2,280 which includes: accommodations, breakfasts and dinners, instruction, supervisory personnel, program materials, all forum activities, and private motor coach transportation during the program. Students will need money only for lunches and incidentals they wish to purchase.

Transportation to and from the NYLF/MED city is not included. Shuttle service between the forum location and selected airports is available on the first and last days of the Forum. There is a $40 one time fee for this service. Forum staff will be on-site in local airports to assist arriving students.

I probably won't be able to go. But does anyone know if its possible to go with a scholarship? I really do want to go.

-sigh- Nothing is possible w/ out money. =[

I got this same letter, I really want to go too, but the only scholarships they give out are after you apply and pay the $2000+ tuition
So if you don't get the scholarship, you still have to pay the full price and go.

This is what I've heard, it might have changed, however.

It didn't unless you can get a corporate grant, no. If you look carefully at teh financial aid section. its like all corporate grant.
Plus I have a theory that most institutions are out to get your parents money.
But I'm still going, even though I wish I knew more about the program before just throwing a whole wad of money into the program.

I'm not going to be really answering your question cus I have no idea how the scholarship works, but I went to NYLF on Medicine last summer & I loved it. It's a great experience cus you learn quite a bit about the medical field.

If you have more questions, PM me smile.gif
transience.
I went last summer, and I was able to go for free since I got a scholarship from the UC Davis Health System. I live in California, and I happened to get all the scholarship information from my high school counselor.

Hm...you can try e-mailing the UC Davis Health System about the scholarship.
But last year, I had to turn in my completed application, essay, transcript, and reference letter by February 2nd. Although maybe it's different this year?
Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

IMO, these conferences are a waste of money. There are many things I rather do than spend this much on a conference. For example, you shadow a doctor, intern at a nearby hospital, take classes at a local CC, get a job, etc. I spent my summers taking classes at Ohlone/De Anza, interning at Stanford Hospital and attending a conference at Stanford (cheaper; only $175) Stanford Youth Leadership Conference! (here's a link)
Plus, you'll meet me since I'm part of the youth council! Stanford Youth Council Official Website

^Is it possible to become a member of the Stanford Youth Council?
I want to become more active...joining more clubs & such; but I heard joining clubs only loooks good if your an officer.
Eehh..I'm a sophomore and the only clubs i've participated in is:
-First Priority Christian Club
-Science & Tech club (freshman year; teacher left so this club disbanded..Right now my friends & i might start it up again who knows)
-B.O.S. (Studygroup for AP class. w/ me and friends..dosen't really count but ya)
-Academic Decathalon
>< offtopic here okay.

^I'm thinking of applying for summer 09 SMYSP program @ stanford. Its for low income families..I guess its like the stanford youth leadership conference?

I'm trying to intern at an outpaient center near my home; but the thing is. The internship lasts 2 weeks into my junior year! Which means i can't do it. This sucks. xP

Any tips?

(& my parents don't want to drive me waaayy far from home just to intern everyday. Unless i can be a resident-like intern o.O if there is such thing. T.T

I don't think that you should do this program. I really regretted taking it. Sure it was a good experience to meet different students from all over the country, but that's it. All I learned was about the residency program. It's totally not worth the cost. But... if you get it all paid for, then why not? My friend is attending a different program, and his work (starbucks) is sponsoring him. Maybe you should look into a business/store sponsor?

I attended this program .. two years ago?
I agree with the person above me. It was a good experience, but probably not worth the money.
You get to see a lot of things, meet a lot of people, (and they pretty much work you all day long!) but I feel as if the program is aimed more towards those who aren't sure if they want to go into the medical field or not. If you're sure you're going into the field, I wouldn't really bother attending NYLF. ^^;
