Full Version: Wisdom Teeth Extraction Gone Wrong
soompi forums > soompi interests > health & fitness

I had my wisdom teeth extracted 4 days ago, all four of them..
Everything was going okay. pain minimal, swelling is going away, no bruising...

But unfortunately. my tongue is still numb from 4 days ago, so it's definitely not the freezing and something fishy is going on.
It's still a bit early. but I did do some research and one dentist website said that tongue, cheek, lips being numb after surgery is
due to hitting a nerve in the tongue. And nerves grows about 1mm over a FEW MONTHS!.. so depends how bad it is, how long it takes to heal.
Well i think that mine isn't so bad because only my tongue is numb.... so i surfed the web a bit more and came across the most HORRIFYING thing.

its a forum on the exact problem im experiencing and LOOK
http://www.sciential.net/cgi-bin/dcforum/d...D9&archive=
"Tongue Numbness for 7+yrs"

and its all just as bad. 2 years still healing, 5 years, 3 years...
the best i saw was 8 months and fully recovered.

but that's still not very good. im terrified..

does anyone on soompi have this problem.. that went away fast...??

I suggest you go back the dentist office and talk to them, and let them know whats going on, cause numb tongue ain't cool.

Definitely give your dentist a call and let them know what's up.

Talk to the dentist, they can help you the best.
Are you sure you didn't just bite it? I did that somehow when I got mine done.

EDIT: news!!

Paresthesia
A complication that can be associated with the removal of wisdom teeth is that of "paresthesia." Wisdom teeth can be positioned in the jaw in a manner in which they lie in close proximity to nerves. Sometimes during the process of extracting a wisdom tooth these nerves can be bruised or damaged. As a result, numbness of the tongue, lip, or chin may occur. (Having this condition is termed "paresthesia.")

The sensation of paresthesia can be similar to that feeling you have when a dentist uses an anesthetic to "numb up" a tooth, only instead of disappearing in a few hours the numbness persists. In most cases paresthesia is temporary and resolves on its own within a few days or weeks. In more severe cases the healing process may take several months. If the nerve damage has been significant, the paresthesia may be permanent. (good news!! since im only on day 5 not even a week.. but could be bad news.. but im praying!!)

Paresthesia is typically a "sensory" as opposed to a "motor" phenomenon. By this we mean that the person does notice an altered state or loss of sensation (touch, proprioception, pain and temperature) in the affected region but does not typically experience nerve/muscle interaction problems such as facial deformities, compromised tongue movements, or speech deficits.

A hope of avoiding the complication of paresthesia is one reason why dentists suggest that wisdom teeth be removed when a patient is "young." As humans age on through their twenties the roots of their wisdom teeth continue to form and develop, making these teeth more difficult to extract without disturbing surrounding tissues (like nerves). The incidence of nerve damage for wisdom teeth removal runs as high as 10% after the age of 35, whereas it is rare for teenagers.

you guys don't have to worry about this if your wisdom teeth root's aren't that long.
sometimes, the roots of your teeth grow too long and hit your nerves, so when they get extracted, it can cause damage/paralysis...
but this is a very low chance!
one of my wisdom's root was on a nerve and so they told me that i might have a chance of getting it, but i didn't smile.gif

day 6 . still numb

but the funny thing is im still reaally young, so my roots probably arent that long.. but still it happened =(
anyways im praying. ill keep you guys updated.

my dentist told me that she only had one other patient that had this happen.
bad part is she said it took that patient 2 years to heal. =(

oh man...that sucks
i remember when they told me the possible complications
when i went to get my wisdom teeth extracted
i literally froze, i was too young to be paralyzed haha
but yeah, it went ok and nothing happened
i hope you can get the feeling back in your tongue soon
smiile
sad.gif thats sucks... bad
you hit the jackpot---in a bad way.
dude if that happened to me, you'd see a little asian kid acting as a korean 40 old woman asking for a refund D: lol

on the serious note:
is time the only medicine? no anti-reversal medication?
dont you accidentally bite your toungue and stuff, and it bleeds w/o you knowing sometimes and stuff when its numb.

hope it heals soon girlie smile.gif

boodice
go back to the dentist and say "eye for an eye"..

then grab his dentists drill and stab him in the tongue
*cupcake*

and worst. i cant talk.. i cant imagine living without being able to talk :'(.
