i have to say: my parents are so bad at their second language! they live here for 20 years or sometihng but they dont know anything except some important words like "how much?" and "thats good!" -.-'' its really embarrassing that i have to translate everything for them *poor me*

and how about you guys? do you know this situation or do they speak that language fluently?

im very curious...=)
mystikalz
My parents have been here for about 20+ years now and I guess they're alright at it. My dad pretty much speaks it fluently, but my mum has a slight Filipino accent when she speaks English, (which is hilarious, might I add) but she does have a pretty extensive vocabulary.

Same for me ^^

I'm a Korean living in Italy, you know.
And even though my sister and me speaks Italian & Korean both fluently,
my dad still can't speak it. He knows 'Yes' / 'No' / 'Goodmorning' / 'Goodbye' / 'What time?' etc.
It's so embarassing when I'm with him on the streets or something =P
He does understand Italian though, he can't speak fluently.

My mom on the otherside speaks Italian and Korean both fluently. She really does.
Maybe it's because she studied in Milan when she was a teenager...

I think it depends on everyone.
*lyrynne*
err...i'm filipino-korean
my dad who is korean can't speak english and it's hard to understand him so i have to check my electronic korean dictionary when i'm talking to him...but that was before...
my mom is bilinggual...she can speak english, filipino, spanish, korean and bisaya (filipino dialect)

Lol, my mum's pretty good with her English (although she has a distinct Korean accent xD!), but my Dad is hopeless.

Haha, my mum learnt English by studying abroad and hanging around multicultural communities, so naturally, the prevalent spoken language was English. My dad also travelled abroad in his youth (hahaha), but he always hung around the Korean community. His vocab is very basic, and always says 'the' in between words, like a true Korean. xD;;

My dad doesn't have the patience to learn a new language. He's frustrated by the fact he can't communicate well here, but he's never going to try and learn the language. Hahaha, he always says that's why the rest of us (i.e. my little brother, my mum & me) are here. LAWL. xDD;;

Although, my bro speaks very broken Korean, and his pronunciation is totally Westernised. My parents think it's a huge disadvantage not to know one's mother language. I understand why now, but my bro's got awhile to go before he'll want to learn Korean. xPP

my parents are indonesian chinese and have been living in indo since they're young.
so they have no problem in indonesian language and chinese language(mandarin and hokkien)
but then we moved to malaysia a few years ago. and their english is.. [sorry] horrible. XD
charmainee
Yes they are. *proud*
They have a bit of an accent, and they aren't expressive and stuff...but they know like 50 different asian languages each, so it's okay. xD
I wish I knew how to speak Mando and Canto...T__T Still got all of those dramas though. xD
luvbubble15
haha yeah my parents got accents.
ugh

we live in germany, my mother came here when she was 15 & went to school here too so she's pretty fluent at the language.
my father, on the other hand, :x he understands almost everything but he always gets the grammar & sentence construction wrong when speaking. it's annoying bc he's been living here for like 20 years..
STEPHOO--
Yeah, both my parents can speak english pretty well.
My dad has a slight accent at times though.
twinkle_l0ve
my parents moved to australia about 17/18/19 years ago, haha im not completely sure
my mama is pretty good at english coz she went to classes and works in a hospital so communication is vital
shes accepted the australian way of life and makes a lot of australian friends
my dad on the other hand.. he still sticks with his traditional korean beliefs lol

Joanna
haha same with my parents. they lived here for about 20+ years too. my dad is better at English than my mum though.
My Mandarin is ok, i think better than their English xD
LunaDiviner
My parents are pretty good. They got degrees in English before they came here. They also learnt here for a while I think. They can communicate fine. They talk to me in English most of the time to. They actually know more about English grammar and stuff than me.
chocopocky
They can understand english and speak it decently with a heavy Viet accent. LOL

and their Spanish totally sucks.
tinil-galia
They can't speak English.
My Mom can understand but when she speaks... she doesn't sound so good.
She's picking up English from us. We've been living in Singapore for 6 years, btw.
My Dad don't speak English.
But that's okay cause my Dad works in Indonesia.
<3 for six seasons
When we lived in Germany [dad's home country] when i was younger,
my mom's german, was okay and it is comprehensible .. but she speaks
with an accent. 8D
And when we moved here in UK [mom's home country] , i guess
my dad's english was understandable but he has a deep accent ;X

miss_vicky
Hm, my parents are pretty good with it. But every now and then, they forget about the words, and say it in their native tongue. Otherwise, they ask me how to spell this and that and what does this mean and whatever. If they don't know someting, or I'll have to translate, it's kind of difficult trying to find the words to explain, when it doesn't have a translation or whole new meaning. They still have their accent too, even though they'll live here for 20+ years.
BABY´Dont`EAT<3Cake!
Da.rn their in the middle? Like not that bad but not that good either ph34r.gif

My dad is pretty good at English, but he's been in the States since he was in high school. My mom, on the other hand... not so well.
andsharonx
My mum understands it and can speak it well enough, but it just... sounds fobby lol o___O;;
But my dad can speak it fluently - his grammar kinda sucks sometimes though lol
Antz

my parents have lived in america for 23 years and they know english pretty well...they can write, read, and speak it
xstrawberry_bearx
My mom can speak english but she has a accent in her voice.
It's sometimes funny though and cute since some of the words she cant quite
pronounce -- I tease her about that and she finds something to tease me right bak T_T.
hangbok_2007
Yeah my dad is fluent in Japanese and my mom speaks pretty good english, just bad spelling lol.
She used to fluently speak German though, also with my dad...he knew French.
forgottenmemories
No, my parents pretty much suck when it comes to english. Well, my dad knows a lot of english but the man refuse to use it. Its so annoying, I have to translate everything for them. sleep.gif
gd-ise.
they have the BEST chinese accents xDD
dancingbymyself
My dad is from ohio so... yea he speaks english pretty well.
My mom (korean) on the other hand has an accent, but not a korean one lol. Like you can tell she isn't native american, but you can't tell where she's from.
*.:StarryEyeSurprise:.*
Both of my parents are engineers and were very well educated

They knew Eng before coming to New Zealand so atm, both my parents eng skills are above average.

My mum especially has really good english for a middle aged chinese woman.

My parent's eng skills are probably better than the majority of asian parents that have daughters/sons around my age (18)

I actually find it funny when you see asians that have lived in another country for more than 5 years struggling with basic eng. I mean you're in a diff country, shouldn't you make an effort? My parents have quite a few euro frds so guess that helps.
loversixteen
We've been staying in Canada for probably more than ten years now? but my mom can't really speak english that well. and also for my dad, he can speak it fluently, but he sometimes need me to define some words for him.
robokiddd
my parents are from korea and came to america 17 years ago...
they do okay. they suck at english but they can converse with people with both sides understanding eachother.

plus....my parents know broken spanish too. hahaha

broken spanish + broken english + perfect korean.... thats my parents. =]
busagiboo
My parents have been in Canada for 20 years now and both of them can speak English very fluently. My mom and dad have slight accents when speaking English, but everything is pretty understandable.
suzic87
Both my mum and dad can speak english, however my mum is better than my dad as she lived in england longer than dad and went to high school here. My dads english is ok but he rarely speaks it only if hes talking to english people, the rest of the time hes blabbering away in cantonese he also has a really stong chinese accent and its funny when he speaks english lol
spiral_flare
My parents can understand it very well, but speak......not so much. I hate their accents, they sound horrible. I hate it especially when I have a friend over and they come into my room and tell me something in ENGLISH because maybe they want to show off in front of my friend or something...I really don't know. And I tell them to be quiet and say it in our native language. And they seem to want to annoy me more so they continue in English. But the younger people in my house can speak without an accent (me being the best at it.......lol j/k).

But then again, we've been here for only 6 years.
lalaleidy
Yeah, my parents can speak English very well. smile.gif
But, other than Filipino and English, they do not know other language.
My mom used to study French but stopped. They both have foreign blood but they don't practice it.
