Do you guys do this? Im Korean&iIrish, but somehow (almost) all my friends are Japanese, I didn't do it on purpose, but somehow it just ended up this way. Anyways, is it weird that I picked up some of their slang. I mean, you know that sometimes when you hang out with people alot you tend to pick up their slang (EX. if they say "cool beans" all the time, you might start saying it too?) Well, I started picking up some Japanese slang, like just random things, say, instead of saying shut up i'll say urusai, or instead of using the Korean word jincha like I used to i'll say maji de? Haha, is this bad, I was hanging out with one of my non Japanese friends and I said it without thinking, and she was like "Wtf was that" and im like "My bad lol, i've been hanging with my Japanese friends too much" and she was like "we're Korean, don't speak Japanese".
Haha so basically is using slang words from another culture bad?

the more earlier korean generations don't like japan in general lol.
my mom is KIND of like that, except we're related to japanese by marriage. my grandparents don't like japan because of the whole japan taking over korea thing. my parents are more neutral about it but there is some subtle dislike for them.
besides that, in my personal opinion, it is a little weird if a korean speaks chinese or japanese (or some other asian language) automatically without thinking. your mom might have thought it was weird, not necessarily bad.
or you could just ask her yourself. =/
edit
oh yeah, none of my family is racist. just some tension that takes a while to fade xD

those of us who hang around with friends from other countries, cultures, and backrounds (like many people here)--are doing that too. certain words/phrases--are part of our daily speech, and we use them without thinking most of the time. For me it's mostly Korean. I've dreamt in Korean, too, and have heard other languages also. Probably a combination of what I like, my friends, and maybe reading too much (and trying to learn certain languages). To me it's natural that people do that.
I think when you do it unconciously, it's a little different from doing it on purpose--and then acting like you did it by accident...which may get some people called something un-nice. =x

Ahaha, before I got to the end of your post, I was thinking 'I hope it's not another one of those people who just say KAWAII >_>'. LOL.
I think it's unconsciously, it's okay? i mean, i know what you mean - it's contagious.
i started using a phrase after my friend's use it a lot.
it's just never been in a different language :p
i just dislike it when some anime-lover uses KAWAII and desu and stuff like that.
:/ it's annoying and irritating. even though i'm not japanese.

I don't think it's a bad thing. It's just that you say it subconsciously and the other person who doesn't get it won't understand what you're saying because they've never heard it before, you know?
I mean, same goes for me. I tend to pick up Spanish slangs from a group of friends and end up not making sense when I'm talking to another group.

^ Lol I do that too.
I'm Chinese and my friends always TRY to speak Korean hahahs.. it's really funny because my American student teacher is from Korea and he looked at us weirdly when he overheard us trying to speak Korean. We always say phrases like oppa, onnie, etc, etc.

it depends on what words. i hate it when non-viet people swear in viet. there was that phase where everyone knew at least one viet swear word. SO ANNOYING!
and sometimes they didn't even know what they were saying.

I dont think its bad. I do it a lot. I love the whole asian cultures and whatnot, and i picked up some of the languages and stuff (korean, japanese, chinese, ect).
I subconsciously say things in a mix of languages when i dont mean to.
Half the time I never noticed, like in school and stuff, until someone pointed it out that i do it xD
I never liked when people said "kawaii" and that was the only think that they knew...but oh well.
I kind of do that with like...unnie with my sister xD just cause she's addicted to k.dramas now. lol.

If your constantly around the language being spoken it's naturally going get into your head. Once it's in your thoughts chances are high it will come out unconsciously. You have Japanese friends who have exposed you to their language, you hear it and use it around them so it becomes second nature.
It's probably better to try and control it though. If you're around people who don't know that language then they aren't going to understand you... you can't really expect them to 'get it.'
I'm learning a few different languages but I stop myself from inserting foreign words into my sentences, even though I'm thinking them, because I know people will be like
I don't see why it should be bad, but if your using them around people who don't know the langauge then you're probably going to have to explain things....

Its okay, I guess in your situation you just gotta be more aware.
I think it makes people more cultured and thats a good thing.

I dont think there's anything wrong with it. I do it all the time, LOL.
I tend to mix up random phrases in different languages a lot. ^__^;
It just happens naturally Im not even aware until my friends points it out;

I'm taking Japanese right now and I'm constantly watching J-dramas, so I use words like "Ehhh?", "Hai", "De mo" in my sentences a lot. I don't think I do it on purpose. I just happen to use them a lot and they get stuck inside my head. I have the same situation with Mandarin only because I don't know how to pronounce some words in Cantonese, even though I'm a Canto speaker.
But yeah, if you tend to hear a specific language a lot, that's what it does to you. My friends don't have a problem with me when I use the phrases that they don't understand. In fact, they kind of like me doing that so they learn new words. I try to control myself when I realize that I've been using Japanese or Mandarin words...try doing the same. Before you speak, remind yourself that these people don't know any Japanese.

i do it all the time except most of my family members are a bunch of people who don't like to embrace many things with open arms and just call me a weirdo when i do. kind of like that one time i had said i wanted to learn thai and my brother said, "we're hmong not thai."

a lot of people use Yiddish words, just because so many are part of regular (American/Western/English) speech/culture, and it doesn't matter where they come from- or what they're backround is. You hear it a lot in places like NY and NJ.
most people know a lot of the bad words in Yiddish. lol

Hahhaha, yeah I sometimes uses other cultures words, because either I hear it so much, or I really like that word. Also, I used words that they wouldn't know so that I don't get in trouble and all that. Because I'm Lao, I would use some Korean or Japanese words to say things, when I'm pissed at my brothers or sister or friends or when I think something is cute and all. Like "babo, baka, kawaii, saranghae and all that good stuff." I think it's becoming a daily thing in other people lives and all as well as mine, but either way that's what I think though. (^__^)

Ahh no. I know words in Spanish and Korean but I never use it.
People around me speak English all the time so I usually just use English.
But when I suddenly react, I say "EH!?" "Majikayo..." "Uzai." lol japanese slang.
I get weird looks at times.
But yeahh, even if I wanted to use certain words, I wouldn't know when to use it without it being awkward.

Well lots of asians use "ok cool". or "Thankyou." "WATSUP".
