A Lockdown, Then Relief, at a Brooklyn School
By Jennifer Medina
John Dewey High School in Brooklyn was under a lockdown for several hours today after a substitute teacher saw a student holding a handgun in a classroom. The student was apparently showing the gun to another student when the gun suddenly fell on the floor. The student then picked up the gun and ran from the classroom, the police said.
Within minutes, police had surrounded the school and kept students inside the building, but several students had already left before the police arrived. After searching the school for more than two hours, the police were unable to find the student with the gun.
Unlike many other high schools in the city, John Dewey does not have metal detectors to scan students regularly.
After threatening graffiti was found in the boys’ locker room several weeks ago, school safety officers brought in portable metal detectors for the day, said Marge Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the Education Department. At the time, one male student was found with a gun in his backpack, and he was suspended. Ms. Feinberg said officials were confident that the student was not the same as the one involved in the lockdown today.
At 3:30 p.m., after school had let out, students seemed to be relieved and excited. Roberto Pineda, whose daughter is a freshman at the school, had waited at the door for hours. His daughter, Michelle, had her cellphone taken away from her during the metal detector scan several weeks ago, he said, and he was worried because he could not get in touch with her.
“I am upset no one has come to tell me that ‘your daughter is doing fine and everything is O.K.,’” he said. “How come they took cellulars away from students and they can’t find a gun?”

I am so mad because i was in my gym for 2 and a half hours for the school to reopen.
They didn't even tell us till like 45ish mins into the lockdown. The police came around 15ish mins later.
I miss like 4 classes and in the lockdown we were sitting on the bleachers for like the whole 4 periods
I had to go to the bathroom and no one was let out.
I had a feeling that something like this would happen today. I just can't wait for the 1st to come.
And the worse thing was that they didnt do anything after the time the gun was found. No new security officers to secure the hallways. Because in my school, we have free periods so we don't have class and there are always kids in the hallway and the security dont even care
And
Earlier the past week there were metal detectors. My cell phone was taken away like a week ago. I had no phone to call my parents to let them know i was safe. And we had a practice lockdown on tuesday and i thought that it was a practice lockdown
