well, i prefer skiing only by default because that's all i have done my entire life (started at age 4).
but this season, i hope to start snowboarding here in PA and the East, since skiing is no fun around here....but i guess it has to get a little bit colder for it to snow....60 degrees does not work for snow.

Atleast in Snowboarding, you don't have to worry about your legs going seperate ways in a situation where you have limited control over the speed and direction your board takes you.

I'm thinking about going snowboarding with a friend this winter break.
He already knows how to snowboard, but I know
NOTHING (and I mean nothing) about it other than it involves a board and snow. I haven't even seen a lot of snow for years.
I'm slightly intimidated.
Eh...so what should I expect as a first-timer? What was snowboarding like at first for you? What kind of clothes do I need to wear? Anything would be extremely helpful.
Thanks.

I LOVE Snowboarding and of course can give some advice.
Money: bring extra for food because the food is usually pricey and you get hungry after riding for a long time.
Clothes: Wear Layers. You should wear like leggings, and then sweats, and then waterproof pants!! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WATERPROOF!!! Sweaters are not really good for first-timers because the snow sticks to it and it also gets heavy when wet. You should wear like alot of long sleeves or layers of shirts. Make sure you tuck them in your pants cuz snow sticks to the end of shirts when you fall. You should wear a thin waterprood jacket over your layers of shirts. If you wear a thick and heavy one, its harder to move. Thin layers is the way to go.
Tips:
*Balence helps ALOT. I'm a pretty athletic girl and I would say I have a pretty good balence from (Ice Skating + roller blading).
*Buying those temporaty heat things are GREAT investments!!
*BRING A HAT!!! your ears will freeze~
*Bring a hankerchief or something to cover your face. Goggles help alot.
*Make sure your gloves are waterproof!!
*Borrowing a snowboard from a friend around your size will save you like $30-$50 dollars.
I hope i helped!! and have FUN!!!

SNOWBOARDING. I heard that alot of skiers never go back to sking once they try snowboarding. yuppers

CLOTHES:
ski/snowboarding pants are a MUST! they are waterproof and thick, which will keep you warm. i usually wear an underarmor shirt, a tee-shirt, a sweater, and then my jacket (waterproof too!). if you get hot, you can just take off one of the layers. yea, wear a hat and some waterproof gloves. "hot hands/feet" are very nice on a cold day! if you don't have goggles, wear sunglasses because the sun's reflections on the snow are very harmful to your eyes. oh and wear sunscreen!
well, i don't think i can really give you that many tips on snowboarding because i'm personally not that good.

yea, i have horrible balance, so that probably explains it. you should probably start on the bunny slopes. don't let your friend take you up to the black diamonds yet! using the edges of the snowboard is very important because it allows you to turn and stuff. and learn how to brake! i used to zoom down the hill and never really learned how to brake, so i would just sort of curl into a ball and topple down the hill until i stopped. yea, not smart, so please learn how to brake first.
i don' think i was too helpful.
KIM_SAYS:
Dec 4 2006, 01:14 AM
Ohhh thank you both! See, I probably would've ended up just wearing jeans and a couple jackets and declared myself ready to snowboard if you guys didn't post. THAT'S how clueless I am about snowboarding. Jeez.
Hmm...my balance is ok...I think. I play tennis...but I don't think that'd help any. lol I don't even know what the heck black diamonds are, but I think I will stay away until I actually get myself used to snowboarding.
And I will refuse to do anything before learning how to brake.

Anything else?

i'm a snowboarding noob but, in addition to what everyone else said:
i would bring a big bottle of water. the drinks get expensive.
wear super thick, or double socks.
bring tissues. (my nose would get really runny out there)
my first time snowboarding, i remember the tug rope being harder to learn than snowboarding itself. watch how people do it before actually getting on. make sure you hold on to the rope tightly. if you fall while on the tug rope, quickly scoot to the side so you don't block the person behind you.
you might also want to determine if you're regular or goofy. regular means right foot back, goofy left foot back. if you feel uncomfortable once you're on the slope, you can go back to the rental and change boards to see if you're more comfortable. here's a helpful link:

buy a camelpack or some other water resevior type backpack so you can just drink water out of the backpack strap, helps a lot. Dakine, Burton, there are tons of backpacks like that but these also help to hold your board for when you're too lazy to carry it in your hands. you can just strap them to the backpack. They also hold some food and your phone and such. you will get hungry up there, lodge food is expensive.
waterproof snowboarding clothes are a must as you will fall on your butt a lot. even though they're waterproof, if you just sit around in the snow all day, you're pants will get wet anyways.
BUY THERMALS AND LONGJOHNS. they help to keep you insulated.
the usual layering for the torso goes, thermalshirt of some kind + t-shirt + jacket. the jacket will usually keep you very well insulated and you'll get warm once you get into it. the legs are usually longjohns, snowboarding socks and snow pants.
most importantly, STRETCH. if not, you'll feel the pain and its not fun. (learned from experience >_<)
as for socks, they sell snowboarding socks at like the sport stores if, you live in CA, Zumies, REI, Copeland's, Sportmart, Sports Authority, etc.
if you're worried about your face getting cold and such, buy a ski mask, they rock.
bring an ipod up there to have some entertainment =D
for braking, you're going to be leaning back on your heels a lot, sooo the muscles around your knees are going to be worked a lot. try not to fall on your hands as you could hurt your wrist especially on ice or packed snow. when you fall, try to kind of roll on your back but to keep your head from hitting (it'll hurt a lot) if you hit your head a lot, buy a helmet.

snowboarding! i've got my own gear now. I've thought about trying skiing, but all the skiers i've run into at the resorts and such have been such assholes to me. i'm not saying that all skiers are, its just the ones who've i've run into have kinda killed it for me. so i probably won't be trying skiing anytime soon.

don't even MENTION my first time snowboarding...
i recently started to snowboard, and that was probably about... ehh...
anyways, now im pretty okay,
but the first day was like... h*ll...
like, expect your body to be practically bruised, lol.
if you're not afraid of speed, then it's alright. you'll be fine,
but i was HECKA afraid of speed then.
if i started to speed up a little, i tried to slow down,
resulting me to stop every few feet, lol.
and if you're not careful, you might like... fall on your butt or side,
like... A LOT, so just be on the lookout.
i would also recommend taking hand warmers (the pouch thingies that warm up to the cold).
they are REALLY helpful.
and always make sure you have goggles, gloves and a good jacket.
cuz it sux *ss if you get snow in your clothes. ugh.
you don't have to dress WARMLY,
because by the time you're done, you'll be all sweaty anywayz.
as for your equipment, just wear thick socks (you'll get blisters from your boots if you're not careful),
and make sure you have waterproof clothing. (north pole jackets, burton jackets, snowboarding jackets in general). goggles are a must because the ice and snow gets into your eyes.
it'll damage them.
err... i always wear a beanie or something to cover my hair or ears cuz it gets kinda cold out there. hehe. ^^
and... yeah, that's it.

tips:
walking: when you walk with a snowboard on, leave your foot in the angled side. that will most likely be your left foot unless you are brining your own board with your own customized bindings.
you should leave your right foot outside not "inside". So take a step with the right foot, and slide your left foot in forward and to the side. Some people dont know how to walk with a snowboard attached to your foot, and they look really weird and it starts to drain the energy in your legs when you are inching around.
you probably cant keep your balance enough to start carving, "S" shape.
if you are right handed, you should probably use your left foot in front, and if you are renting a snowboard, then most likely the left foot will be at an angle. If you can't carve, you just swith off which foot is in front
this is how you stop :

gradually sliding the foot in the back so its parallel with your other foot.
thats why when people stop faster, they dig up snow and spray it everywhere
always, remember to fall backwards, dont fall face front first. trust me, when you are sliding down the hill and the ice starts to scratch your face and you cant stop...
good snowpants = they dont have to be heavy, just waterproof.
make sure you are warm, and be prepared to fall alot.
i just wear a hoodie and go, but those are on not so cold days :x
and, bunnyhill rope tow must be the most horrible way of transportation.
idk how people expect new skiiers and snowboarders to hold on to a rope, which is heavy and moves around side to side, balance, and grab hold on to it all the way up to the top of the hill without falling.
when i teach people how to board, i make them go up the bunnyhill couple times, but just take them up the lift to a pretty decent hill, and let them make mistakes and go down, most of them learn how to stop by themselves haha.

hmm i'm more of a skier but the same basic principles apply
-wear waterproof clothes or you'll get soaked
-bring goggles because it can get blinding
-bring some form of beanie cause your body heat leaves first from the head
-get ready to fall alot...and i mean ALOT

I think you should take lessons beforehand and practice as its not a simple matter of jumping on a board and sliding downhill. You should be able to learn there as there should be instructors for beginners but then that will be a waste of a holiday and you could be stuck on a little beginners slope by yourself if your friends are already good. Most places have marshals and if they see you are not competent enough wont allow you on the same slopes as your friends if you are not at a high enough level...why because you will be a danger to yourself and others, if you are stumbling about whilst others are zipping past at 60kph+ you can seriously get hurt Ive seen it happen.

I got caught with a kids lift ticket.. damn, I told this BS 20 minute story that didnt even make sense about how I'm 12 years old. Atleast I saved $20.
Lesson learned: Safest time to go on lifts with a kids ticket is during 10am-3pm. Security is tight outside of those times.
Anyways, I hate the way people fall all the time and sit there for a minute. I'd love to run them over, but... I dont want to hurt myself. I think the bottom of the slope is a lot more dangerous than the top. It's like an obstacle course down there... I snowboard, sprain my wrist everytime I go due to gaining air, but doesnt stop me from going back up. I want to learn how to skii though, looks cool how you spin like a helicopter and do those tight jumps and go woosh woosh woosh, lol.
