This forum is for nursing students to vent (let all of their stress out); I know nursing school can be stressful! Also, I would like to know what type of nurse you would like to be?

Freshmen here~ (I have a loooooooong way to go)
Majoring in Nursing right now. I'm not sure on what type I'd like to be yet. I mean, as long as it pays well.

I'm really dreading the buttloads of chemistry and biology courses I'll soon to be taking for my next couple of terms.

I'm in nursing right now and will complete next year. Sometimes I wonder why I got into this field but in the end, I'm glad I chose this major. I meet so many new people.
I think I want to work in the Peds department when I'm done. I don't know how some could deal with ER. I had to work in the trauma unit 7 PM - 7 AM for 2 weeks of clinicals. Some of the stuff I have seen...
How'd you guys choose this major, anyways?

Nursing school is really really stressful, as I have to study in my 2nd language.
I don't know what I'll be doing in the future, but I think I would do maternal nursing too. I love seeing new babies being born

how can u going to a nursing major? do u have to major in a science course or what? I am confused about it. I want to major in nursing but my university doesn't offer it, only to RNs. They told me if I wanted it I should go to community college that has it.
Where nursing school did u guys go to?

hopefully by next fall, im going to start applying for the nursing school. the thing that's holding me back is that i haven't finish taking my science courses- chemistry1 and 2 and microbiology. if i pass chem this semester.. im going to start sending out my application to different nursing school. i heard it's very competitive to get in! ;/

Second year here. I'm ADN though. Anyone else ADN? The pre-regs that you take before you actually get into the program weed out a lot of people. The teachers are so blunt, too. They keep on reminding you that about 2/3 of the class will fail or drop out
I took all of my science courses already. AP1, AP2, Micro. I don't have to take Chem since I'm only going for two years instead of four. I'm taking Pharmocology now and man is that class boring.
BTW this is in Texas so it might be different for you guys.
*Sigh* One semester at a time man.

^^Agrees, pharmacology was quite boring. ZZZZzzzz. I know what area I'm going to be spending a lot of time on when NCLEX comes along...
Right now, doing critical care in 5th semester of nursing. Quite exciting yet nerve racking at the same time due to the fact that the patients have highter acuity.
Senior in college, going for BSN. One more semester to go and two lower GE's to catch up on.
Favorite prequisite class is Microbiology. That class was just interesting all the way. Don't know about you guys but bacteria and viruses just interest me.

i graduated from saint martin's university last winter w/ a bachelor's in biology & i'm currently finishing up some prerequisites for the lpn/rn program. i finished up a cna course this summer so all i need now is to obtain my cna certificate to apply to the lpn/rn program for fall 2006.
my future goals after getting my rn license is to continue on w/ my studies & eventually get my masters in nursing. i know i have a lot of schooling ahead of me...but i ain't complaining much.

Depends what program you're aiming for. Are you going for LPN, RN, or BSN? Community colleges offer LPN and RN programs while universities offer BSN. I'll be graduating next semester with my BSN and will take my boards shortly after. I hope I pass on the first try. For the nursing program, there are certain prerequisites that you must take and you apply for the program at your college. See a counselor for more details. I'm not very good at explaining all of this.

Quite sexist but quite true. I had to lift a 400+ lbs. patient today and if there wasn't my 2 male nurse friends with me, the only thing I could have probably lift of her was her toe.
That's great you guys are doing this to improve the health care field. I have some really dumb and mean people in my clinicals that I just want to choke.

That is awesome that you want to do this! Remember nursing is not easy and try to stick with this program if you can! Let me tell you I have struggled with this nursing program, but I am still sticking with it! Anyways, Good luck in the program!

Hell yah, the wound care nurse at my hospital smells like dead flesh *shudders. I'm still in high school, but I've been at the hospital for 2 years now doing rotations but this year I'm strictly stationed at nursing year round.
I'm aiming to get a masters in nursing right now and then go on to be a nurse practitioner.

i'm considering nusing but i can get quite squeamish.... how do you guys deal with that? i mean, just the thought of giving someone a shot makes me nervous! i also heard that nursing has a high job satisfaction, and i can see how someone would see it in that light but on the other hand, i see it as being around ill people, maybe even those who might not live. i just wanted to hear your guys' opinions on this matter.
i'm planning to go into neonatal or pediatric nursing... any advice?

Yeah, the smell gets me too. I did have one patient though that got ran over by a lawn mower. It looked really bad, but I did not think it was gross. I did feel bad for the 6-year- old girl! They had to amputate one of her legs and they saved her other one. The leg they saved has 3 toes missing though. Her father accidentlly ran over her with the lawn mower. It was muddy outside and she slipped and fell down and the dad had headphones one and did not pay attention to where he was going and ran over her. He felt so bad! I felt bad for him too.

Any advice on future goals? Cuz I don't know which field I'm going to. I still want to major in nursing.
I don't get about undergraduate and graduate school. During our freshman year, we have to study in some course first so we can pass it to get into that program? Please anwser this question. I got accept to a college but they said that I did not get into nursing program yet and that I need to at least get a 2.5 cum gpa and get a c or higher in bio and chem during my first semester. So, does anybody is the same as me? I'm very confuse now.

LPN, RN, & BSN
^What does each letter stands for?
How are they different?
LPN = licensed practical nurse
RN = Registered Nurse
BSN = Bachelor of Science in Nursing (It's just a degree you get when you graduate)
The Hierarchy of nurses goes like this:
Registerd Nurses > Licensed Practical Nurses > Certified Nurses Aide (CNA)
RNs get paid the most but you have to go to school the longest out of the three. The lower you are on the chain, you kinda do more of the grunt work like bathing the patient and such but RNs do that kind of stuff as well.

Paper Wings
Dec 22 2005, 09:06 PM
Nurse practioner pwns the other three. I think you need to go to grad school to become one. One of the main difference between NPs and RNs is that NPs can prescribe medications.

Heh... that's exactly how I thought when I was in highschool.. the whole "I'm too good for CSU's". Anyways, no UC offer a Nursing program for the basic generic student, UCLA offers one for nurses who already have an RN license and those wanting a master's. I think some private universities offer nursing program, but that I don't know because I never considered private schools so never researched.. $$ problems..
CSU's are great though, I hope you re-consider your options.

Haha, after seeing the Engineer's thread, I got jealous and was gonna bring this thread back. But then I got caught up with school and blah blah.
Right now I'm doing my pediatric/maternity rotation. To be honest, working with kids are a lot more different than I thought it would be. Aside from the usual nursing care than we provide, I thought that the kids and I were gonna have fun talking about stuff like music and tv and video games and other stuff like that. I also thought it would be refreshing to have younger patients. My expectations were met to an extent but this semester has really opened my eyes to what it means to be a pediatric nurse.
For one thing, these children usually has a parent staying with them in the hospital. It's hard for a student nurse to go about their business under the watchful eye of the parent. It makes me self-conscious anyway. Also, it's really depresing to see a sick kid. I used to think working with old people was depressing because it was like looking into the future. But nothing tugs at your heart muscles like a little kid screaming for mommy

And then there is the fact that kids can be unreasonable. And it's not like you can blame them. Young kids lack the cognitive capacity to really understand the scope of the situation. Finally, calculating medications for children is such a pain in the bottom! You have to worry about safe doses and dilutions and all that nonsense.
Despite all that, pediatric nursing does have it's up sides. I've met some really cool patients. This one kid was listening to his iPod and I asked him what he was listening to. That led to a nice conversation. And then another patient of mine was korean and his mom was staying with him at the hospital. So I walk into the room and they are watching a k-drama on tv. And so a lightbulb went on in my head and we started talking about k-dramas and I mentioned that I liked Full House with Bi and Song Hye Kyo and the mom got super excited and we as had a bonding moment lol
On the academic part of it all, I have a test comming up and a monster 30 page paper due at the end of the month. I have no life
