Does any one hear have scoliosis? or minor?
I have minor scoliosis -__-;;

Im really worried cause my spine is very curved
and i have to wear a brace (maybe)

but the thing is, on the outside i looks perfectly normal -__-
is anyone suffering the same problem as me?

edit:

my curve is 30 degrees
and im 13
xp30ny_x
im not but i have a friend who is i head if it gets really serious then you have to like have surgery on ur spine and wear this huge brace everyday tears.gif painful but it wont happen to you
angelZ
i have it...my spine is in an S shape~
i found out i had it in grade 6...but luckily i didn't have to wear a brace nor have surgery...you only need to when they find that your spine curve is really bad...like more than a certain degree.
Epitaph
i got scoliosis (some reason girls have it more), but mine is minor to the max, very small small curve that can only be felt but not seen

use this for when you get drafted! it works!
CloudyDays
i have it.. the worst it ever got was 19 degrees which isnt really that bad. my sister had to wear a brace though cuz hers was around 32 degrees. this guy i know at school had to do surgery and he had metal put in his spine and stuff.

My friends has a pretty bad back problem. When he sits down and slumps over, it looks like he has a huge bluge coming out of his back. It looks as if he's wearing a bag and his jacket over it. But he doesn't use a brace or anything, nor is it noticeable when he stands up.
aznhybrid
my friend just got back from surgery for scoliosis
she had minor scoliosis but as a child they told her to wait b/c they knew she would need surgery anyway
she missed about 1 month of school

they just put a metal rod along her spine and took out one of her ribs to help support it, for awhile she had to feed her by sucking on a rag with water and other nutrients on it b/c she couldnt eat solid foods. the surgery upsets your stomach because they have to go in through the front.
ronmexico
I apparently have scoliosis, but they never caught it in grade school because I was so fat. smile.gif After I lost the weight, during my physical for college, they finally noticed. It's only like a 10 degree curve or something like that, and since I was already 18 when they found it, they weren't going to bother doing anything.
artful_DODGER
Are you born with this or do you develop it? O_o
Baybe Gyrl`
i have minor scoliosis, but my doctor said i should be okay because i got my period already (i got it when i was 10 and i'm 17 now).
Ramen-C
oh yeah that, my friend has back probs but im not sure if its that cuz it more nearer to her neck and shoulders but i could be wrong. I hope you cant develope it but when i walk sometimes my neck is a little more forward so i hope thats not it.
Queenie<3
I have minor. They said the top left corner of my back is higher than the right corner when I bend over.
xiaoyi
my back has a funny curve but its not sideways so i think its ok

but lying on my back hurts cuz of the spine bones poking out.
heartcube*
i had it when i was a kid.. i wore this brace that you were like a bag (but isn't a bag) and can take off. it sorta worked. the curve isn't very noticeable now...
SupaBayWitIt
i hav a slight curve in my spine. =\ gotta keep my back straight to get it straight again. its kinda hard cus i slouch a lot.
Baybe Gyrl`
WHOA!! i don't know if it's just me or maybe it's suppose to be like that, but like..

i put my hand on my spine sitting upright and when i slouch over, it moves to the right!

hahaha.... how freakishly scary, but cool.

maybe that's where the curve is bc my doc never pinpointed to me where it was.
SHEEKxD
>< i dont think im a minor then..
my curve is 30 degreess...
one of my shoulders is higher then the other ><

BTW: im in 7th grade (13)
tranced_azn
yea, i have minor scoliosis. i was soo scared that they might have to do surgery or something, but they said i was fine. just check ups once in a while, but i just hope that i dont have to get surgery all of a sudden one day. =)
Rosencrantz
i have a mild case of it.
Only like a couple more degrees until I had to wear a back brace, which is so ugly and makes you look disabled. The day the doctor told me that and i saw the x-rays, I went home and cried my heart out non-stop for days. And what's worst is that my dad tells me off hard when i don't do back exercises (which kinda work) and he keeps saying it's all my fault that i have it because I used to carry a one shouldered bag.

Mine is pretty visible, like my right shoulder is higher then my left shoulder. And i can't sit straight long because it hurts my back but what's good is that i have this thing that straighten your back during exercise and it's not visible under shirts

that's because when you slouch your spine expands more than when you're sitting stright, and when your spine expands it goes straighten therefore moving the bone thingies
babyangelgurl
i had scoliosis back in 8th grade.
i had surgery for it though.
bluesky19
i have a minor curvature. but it stopped once i hit a certain age so i dont have to go the the doctors and get x-rays anymore. i had a brace (got it from korea), but it wasnt the full out plastic one. it was so uncomfortable! how old are you? im sure ur spine will stop curving soon. im 21 now and mines stopped curving in my late teens. i heard if ur back is REALLY curved, then it may affect having babies aka difficult labor? im not too sure.

just always remember to keep ur back straight and sit up properly! it'll help.
BOBA:)
My friend has scoliosis, she wears a brace. But thankfully she's taking it off in 4 more months. It's not that bad to wear a brace.. Lol just wear it and you'll be fine.
xlaura
I believe I was around 35 degrees before surgery
& now I'm around 20 something
Just make sure you get regular checkups & xrays
SHEEKxD
AGH my curve is 30 degreees..do i have to get surgery?!?!
my parents make me do these streches 30 min a day and
i always have to have my back against something straight ><
my doctor said i have to wear a brace..like a corset

btw im 13
xlaura
if you wear a brace you should be fine
somebody I knew wore a brace for a little bit & he didn't have to go through surgery although I'm not sure how severe his was

=\ sorry I'm not much help
sajinlover

MONICA
i had functional scoliosis for a little bit when i played tennis. it was a posture problem. it's gone now so i'm okay.
sweeti.sammi
AAAH i dunno, it seems like it's really common.. or maybe it's just me being paranoid and reading this thread LOL. i hope i don't have it... but i think my bf has it. he told me he has some back problem.. oh boy. braces/surgery? O____O
xmzgeekstax

WhenLifeGivesYouLemons
OMG DUDE, THATS MY ICON.
THANKS FOR NOT CREDITTING ME fury.gif fury.gif fury.gif

graceyoon
i have a minor case too.. so my right hip juts out and if u watch closely i walk kinda crooked.. but my doctor says it won't get worse tho.. let's hope..

my friend had scoliosis but i didn't even notice it until she showed me her back, she says it accounted for her short height.. she got an operation to straighten it out fusing some vertebrae and inserting the metal rod thing.. because doctors said if it goes any worse she won't be able to give birth ><

i found out i have scoliosis when i was in 8th grade. I had to wear a brace for 2 years. I have to had it on for 23 hours a day, 1 hour off to take a shower. AFter a year, i only wear it at nite time. No one notice that i had a biggo brace on because i'm really skinny and i wear a biggo shirt over it. The brace does not help my spine straighten up, but it prevents it from curving more.
banana milk =)
i have minor scoliosis.. it's like a very slim S-curve.

my friend, however, had really bad scoliosis adn they had to put a pole in her back and everything .. . .

I have a severe scoliosis... It is 50 degrees, so I'm getting surgery this summer.
Here's some info...

Scoliosis is the uneven curve of a spine to the side. About 2% of the population has it. When you are standing straight, the spine is supposed to be straight, but for those who have scoliosis, it curves to the side:
IPB Image

The cause of scoliosis is unknown although many believe that it is due to hereditary means (part of your genes) and they call this scoliosis an idiopathic scoliosis (90% have this type). Scoliosis could be caused by car accidents as well. My scoliosis specialist said that backpacks do not cause scoliosis, although it could probably cause a bit of tension in the spine (along with posture- good posture will not fix this problem although I'm sure it might relieve some of the pain). Girls are 4 or 7 times more likely to get it than guys, and if anyone in your family has it, the chance of scoliosis occuring is higher for you.

WHEN DO YOU NEED SURGERY??:
Under 20 degrees: They just watch it.
Over 20 degrees - Under 40 degrees: Brace and possibly physical therapy is recommended.
Over 40 degrees: Surgery is highly recommended (also for patients whose spines are not responding to braces). If surgery is not done, then it can affect adulthood as the scoliosis can then restrict the lungs and prevent women from having children.

EARLY SIGNS OF SCOLIOSIS:
- uneven shoulders
- prominent shoulder blade or shoulder blades
- uneven waist
- elevated hips
- leaning to one side
THE TEST:
If you stand straight with your feet spread shoulder-length apart and bend down to touch your toes, and there is a lump or moreso your back is curved like an arch, then it is most likely scoliosis. Get your back checked out by a doctor so that it can be diagnosed properly (with x-rays and such). The earlier you detect it, the better.

THE SURGERY:
Well, my surgeon says that they will go in through the back and they move the spine and insert a metal rod. This type of surgery is called posterior spinal fusion (i think). However, there are other types of surgery, but the posterior spinal fusion is usually recommended for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. My surgeon said it takes (usually) about a week in the hospital and for about 6 months after, sports & strenuous activity is not recommended. Although, they highly recommend swimming (I guess it's supposed to help).

Most of this information is what I have heard from my doctor/specialists/surgeon... or have researched online. If anyone has further questions, you can visit this site (it has a lot of info and personal stories): http://www.iscoliosis.com
pandazombie
my friend when I was in seventh grade had it and wore braces.
saera
I have an S curve.

13 is kind of late for a brace. How long have you had your period? If it's been a year or two, they probably won't put you in a brace.

I wore a brace from 3rd grade up to beginning of 7th grade for 12 hours a day (so whenever i was home). It was so uncomfortable. After you stop wearing it, you gain weight all of a sudden because your stomach is allowed to expand when you eat. =___=

Don't worry too much.

--

btw. When you wear tight clothes, one waist may be more "deep" than the other side.

I have scoliosis. The last doctor I went to said it was minor, but I really doubt he knew what he was doing (I knew more about scoliosis then he did and had to correct him a few times) . Because of my scoliosis, my legs are of different lengths and one of my hips is higher than the other. My neck is stiff so its hard to turn my head.

I think 30 degrees isnt considered mild; it's moderate. And if you get to 45 degrees, you'll probably need surgery; and it's better to have surgery as a teenager then as an adult.
MzBeciko
i have minor
BTRSWTENVY
my boyfriend has it, one of his hips is higher than his other, and he just found out this year. his doctor didnt say anything about it except that he has it. i hope it doesnt get worse sad.gif

do you go to a chiropractor?

I have minor scoliosis. Under 20 degrees. My pediatrician told me to get it X-rayed, but my uncle, who is a chiropractor, took a look and said it was fine.

Actually a lot of people have it. It's not as uncommon as I thought. My right shoulder is higher than my left, but it's not that noticeable unless I SEVERELY slouch or something. I try not to slouch as much, but I forget a lot. blush.gif

If you notice yourself slouching, push your shoulders back and your chest out. That will straighten out your back. You may notice it hurting at first, but it's your back trying to realign itself after being stuck in a slouchy position for so long.

30 degrees is getting severe...keep it under watch!
SHEEKxD
i have one question
well two
if you wear a brace and you have to wear it for 13 hours, can i wear it to sleep and when i come home after school?

and also, my shoes (converse) they dont have a nice cusion, and somebody told me that if ur shoes dont have cusion ur back can get worse or something...?
i really dont get that...
is it true?

<3
Thanks
XX3CHUNSA
yes. its VERY minor for me though,. there was whole scare for me (i think like 4-5 years ago?) but its ok now.
remorse_angel
Must be a burden >___>. Gah, I know a friend that has it but she's only a minor case so I guess she's okay. Maybe you shouldn't worry too much--just keep an eye on it and do check ups to see if it gets worse or not.
Lollipop <3
my friend has scoliosis ..she wore a brace for it for awhile back in 8th grade. i think she is getting surgery for it in about month. =/

my cousin is also 13 and she has minor scoliosis too but she doesn't need to wear a brace or anything.

.miko
A friend of mine has it but its barely visible except when she wears really tight tops.
clarissacurry
a little. its only about 8 degrees
xkrndreamer
