So I went to KASCON (Korean-Am Student Conference) this past weekend, and realized how much korean-american talents there were that i didnt know of. so i thought it'd be a good idea to have like, a list/discussion to spread the word.

here's some i know:

Ken Oak Band:
Cello rock! check out their website at kenoakband.com
Really soothing kind of music. CD available for download at itunes, or buy on their site.

Susie Suh:

Many people know her already, she's got an album out from 2005, with EPIC.
Jazz-y guitar, kinda Fiona Apple/Norah Jones like? Amazing voice

Neah Lee:
Also amazing female singer. Similar to Susie Suh. REEEALLLYYY nice voice.
CD is out in stores, or if you can't find it, check online.

Forget the Girl:
Rock band, repping 4 asian countries, i think. the lead singer is korean. EP is out, full album coming soon.

Snacky Chan (Chan):
lotta people know him already
rapper/hip hop artist. amazing lyrics, beats, rhymes, ...
check out his CD!
he's a real cool, chillax kinda guy.

I have that Susie Suh CD, too bad i cant rip it because i heard that with every attempt, sony installs some sort of virus or something like that from what i read from amazon reviews.

She has an amazing voice and her lyrics are really profound in some songs.

Are any of the other bands/singers mentioned have their albums available to buy on sites such as amazon or bestbuy, etc?

Thanks

I found out how to rip it. All you have to do is let the software install. rip it from the program it installs to wma. make a cd, then rip it from that. the find thw patch that uninstalls the problemativ software and boom, you have it ripped. took me awhile to figure it out, but I did.

BTW, Susie Suh was my #1 album from 2005 period.
YellohSwtTart

I like Mike Park. He's music is awesome! smile.gif
RACETRAITOR
Yeah, Mike Park's lyrics are awesome. Take this for example:

screw this i'm leaving, i dont need a
racist friend, and i'm not like you, i'm
from Korea, my eyes are small, but your
eyes are closed

So he can't be racist because he's Korean. Koreans are not like ordinary people. Yes, thanks, Mike Park.
Stephen
so we should support them because they're korean? theres a lot of untapped talent in the world

I say support Susie Suh because she's extremely talented, not because she is korean/asian.
moto
Would Amerie be considered kroean american? altho shes half black? She can be korean-black-american

well asians generally dont considered mixes as of their 'own kind', blacks on the other hand will embrace basically anyone as their own kind (they arent picky and have no desire for 'purity')
happyroach
KEN OAK!!!! <33333

I have the Half Step Down album only though :< but at least it's signed ;D~~~

You should see what it's like these days, with that Hines Ward dude who was in the Superbowl. It's been declared that being half-non-Korean is okay as long as you're superfamous.
kahel
among the artists above, i've only encountered ken oak band because of the cello factor. XD i love how unique their sound is. Analog Girl is my fave track among their songs.

and Susie Suh, I haven't heard anything from her yet but judging from your comments, it does seem that she's a must listen...thus, I must check her out. smile.gif
yg4lyfe

chrissejin
Susie Suh!! What was funny is how I met her. It was at Hollywood Bowl, and I was hanging outside. And this girl approaches me asking me who was performing. I was explaining...then I asked her what she was doing here (esp. since she didn't know who was performing). She said that she's performing at the show...singing the National Anthem. I was like OING? She must be someone famous? Then I asked for her name, and she goes "Susie" So I blurted out "Susie Suh???"

I totally didn't recognize her...I think it's because she was wearing this huuuuuuuge hat, and I'm use to seeing her with her hair just long and left alone. We talked for awhile and she gave me her contact email address.

Snacky Chan is cool. I met him when I was in NY (my friends are good friends with him). He came and hung out with us at the hotel. We played Mafia all night long. It was soo freakin funny playing with Snacky because he such a serious and quiet rapper, but he got all into the game. He even gave us a little live performance because we were listening to his CD.

I've met a lot of the other Korean American artists. It's cool. I hope to meet all of them!
Lyline
are the far east movement guys korean?
hpnotiq
^ i think 2 of them are? not sure but there is/are a korean member.
globosapien

helikoppter
Kite Operations (MySpace) makes some pretty nice indie rock. They released an album called Dandelion Day in 2005.

"Eff" Far East Movement. To put it lightly.
huongface
I love ken oak and mike park! I housed ken, ed, and pete for like 3 days at my house! it was awesome!
AzN_cHiC89
I <3 Far East Movement and Susie Suh!

Far East Movement was awesome at KollaboratioN! I wish more Korean-AM artists were recognize in the American Music industry.
DKYang
Oooh. Thanks for the names. Gonna check them out on myspace, what artist doesn't have one?

There is like no Asian conference or anything like that around where I am, west central FL.
G-Nitro
Even though this cat isn't korean, he's done enough with The Movement crew, that you guys need to check out Roscoe Umali too. Many know him from the old Drunken Tiger CDs where he blew up the spot. But his new stuff is amazing.

I'm surprised at the lack of attention Far-East Movement has received.

But yeah J-Spliff and Prohgress are 100% Korean.

Mad Love for them.
rosa
ken oak band is awesome! the cello and guitar mix is not common at all
jungie012
You guys should check The Ides out! They're pretty good!

not sure if daphne loves derby has been mentioned. Their lead singer is a Korean American

www.myspace.com/daphnelovesderby
tangun2333
Some of the best Korean musicians from US are the rappers/vocalists from Jeet Kune Flow open mic/open floor.

www.myspace.com/jeetkuneflow has some of their collabo tracks

Members are almost all Korean, repping K-Town, Los Angeles. This huge crew has over 25 MCs and singers, plus a whole "Jeet Kune Floor" school of hip hop dancers, poplockers, and breakdancers. Half are Korean-language, others English-language.

Korean-language or bi-lingual members of JKF include:

Shin-B
Lyricall Viruss "44"
Hep Da Tightest MC
Explicit Linez
Exflosive
Brenda
Min
Dumbfoundead
Won Hyo
Nelson

Radio Korea just did a 2 hour special show featuring the Korean-language vocalists from Jeet Kune Flow. Many of JKF could hold their own against any K-pop rapper.
Junanni
Meg & Dia are half-korean half-white. I really like their album "Something Real" and their songs didn't appeal to me in the beginning but then I started listening to them more and more.
xcrim
i love far-east movement<33 ive seen live performance and met them also (:

LYRICKS .. go check him out

Definitely! Bruce Lee Band is great

you guys should check out Seksu Roba. they're an electronic band with two members (1 Korean-American and 1 Japanese-American)

as for those L.A. Korean rappers, they're f'cking wack
tangun2333
yeah lyricks, dumbfoundead, jeet kune flow are the real deal for korean mcs in los angeles.

far east movement can't rap so good, and 2 of the 4 members are japanese. not all LA MCs are "vanilla rice" like FEM.

there's a lot of talented and serious korean mcs from los angeles, such as Jupitersciples, Skim, Slant, Choice, Izreal, Oddibles, Decyplz, Neila, and the list goes on and on. these are some of the best Asian rappers in America. a lot of these korean MCs are not performing for the Asian community, but for multi-racial audiences, so this may be why you haven't heard of them. also, don't sleep on korean rappers Cool Calm Pete (NYC) and Denizen Kane (Chicago)--these two have been known in the US underground hip hop scene for years.

top korean-language MCs from the US include: JKF (LA), Viruss "44" (LA), Shin-B (LA), J-Tek (LA), Exflosive (LA), SQ (LA), HepDaTightest (Seattle), Hungry Hooligans (Bay Area), Explicit Linez (NYC), Roots of Knowledge (Portland), Monique (NYC), etc.

some of the best korean MCs in america actually rap in korean, not english, but korean americans focus too much on english-language korean musicians. and a lot of korean americans also follow other Asian rappers too much, and pretend it's korean, but chinese or japanese is not the same as korean.
Korowa
^
You're quite misinformed about the Far East Movement. They're a 3 member group, and two of them are Korean, and the other guy's Chinese-Japanese.

What do you mean when you call them "vanilla rice"?
fatsoko
Let's see. Does this pertain? He's an up and coming artist that was recommended. I checked it out and it was very very crazy good. Go here-->erickim.net

david choi...one of the best singer/songwriters. i wish he'd produce an album because i would seriously buy it (his music is actually worth dishing out the $15 - 20 bucks). i'm not saying this because he's korean...but seriously, anyone can relate to his music. it's easy to listen to, simple, but convey such deep meanings. his myspace is: myspace.com/davidchoimusic
klx13
The lead singer of The Jumblies is half-Korean (http://www.thejumblies.com).

I LOVE Susie Suh, they reviewed her album in Blender magazine and got rave reviews. Her voice really is very calming.
gookaddict
Jenny Hyun has a pretty voice . =]

i cant believe david choi JUST got mentioned! hes AMAZINGGG songwriter and singer.

there shouldn't be any exceptions to half races...

that's just being racist when you state only blacks tolerate and accept every color, and aren't pure
