I'm going to UCDavis ^^
freshmen or transfer (if so where are you transferring from): freshman
major: physics (though it's likely to change to cell biology or microbiology)
housing: hoping to dorm in North Segundo
brief description about yourself/your goals: My longtime addiction is watching Asian dramas and films. I'll feel so sad when studying takes up all my time and I'm only allowed an hour for drama time

My goal is to pick up a sport, since I've never been a sporty person, it may be a little difficult for me. Hopefully, I can join some clubs while I'm there. I intend to make the best of my college years and hope to goodness that I don't get squished by procrastination and the like

This Friday (April 21st) I'll be visiting UCD. I wish I can go on Picnic Day on the 22nd, but I don't know how to take Amtrak --;

brief description about yourself/your goals: im really leaning toward davis right now, but there may be some ostacles that might prevent me from entering davis (due to my grades...

Hope to see you guys there if I go there. ^^

from what i have heard, yes it is pointless to go to summer advising.
here is the program for ucd freshmen:
http://admissions.ucdavis.edu/summeradvising/progfresh.cfmbasically i think they just give a bunch of useless advice.
but that is the time that you can register for fall classes and take placement exams (which i dont need since i'm a transfer).
but placement exams are offered in the fall anyway for those of you who needs to take it.
i wonder if i can do it from home though.

for those who don't/cannot attend summer advising:
QUOTE
If you absolutely cannot attend Summer Advising, it is critical that you complete the online Cannot Attend Summer Advising Form on MyAdmissions; this ensures you will receive the necessary information and forms to complete Fall Quarter course registration from home, retaining your priority registration appointment. Students from whom we do not receive the Cannot Attend Form, register last, at the very end of the summer registration period. Please be reminded that academic advice, either over the phone or by coming to campus, is generally not available since college advisers dedicate much of their time and effort to helping those students who attend Summer Advising. If you cannot attend Summer Advising, submit the online form as soon as possible.
so it seems like you can do the registration online.

and i also checked that there's a fall orientation program/welcome week (9/25-9/27). thats the time you get your ucd id card, take placement exams, take tours, etc.
so no need to worry about attending summer advising. so yea don't waste $$ on summer advising.

Thanks for the information, Jay.
Though I'll be going to summer school and work, I'll attempt to go to summer advising because I need to take the math placement test. I'm thinking of only doing the "program" ($115) not the "full program" ($215)... well, it does take Amtrak approximately 2 hours to get to Davis from San Francisco right? =_=;
If not then, UCD will offer those placement tests in the fall orientation for sure...right? +_+;
Is anyone rooming with a friend? I hear that friends who room together either marry or hate each other. And well, I'm a girl and my friend's a girl so I doubt we'll marry.
Does anyone know what "EOP" is?

May 7 2006, 09:51 PM
^mm for summer advising...we stay in the dorms right?
do we have like roommates then too?
i decided to room with a friend and yes i am aware we may end up hating each other but we're not like close friends...we just had ap classes together so we know eachother's study habits. plus she lives next to me so when we go home for break we can fly together =]
LYRA, you're lucky you live near davis. i would love to do just the program but i live 6-7 hours away -____-
LYRA
May 10 2006, 06:45 PM
^ Yep, for summer advising you stay in dorms. I'm not sure if you'll room with another person though.
As for my roommate, we're not that close either. We should have a pretty good relationship. I mean, it seems like we're using one another for supplies (rice cooker, mini-fridge, etc) and the familiarity we both need. Lol, but in a strange way, we're still friends on some level.
I'm tempted to go to a community college and just transfer. Many of my friends are doing this. I don't feel that confident enough to take classes in UC just yet. I haven't taken many college level courses so I'm not confident in my abilities yet, which is why hopefully my local community college will accept in me in the summer. I plan to take an English or any science.

welcome to all of you that have chosen to attend UC Davis next year. it's a nice campus here. i have a few advice for you guys.
1) definitely live in dorms or you'll regret you never experienced it. you will get to meet so many friends from it.
2) join clubs, fellowships, or whatever it is because that will help you meet lots of new people too.
3) most people who bike will get in at least one bike accident so don't worry too much. i take the bus, it's free.
4) if you're a shy person, try to make an attempt to talk to people cuz the saddest thing about college is being an antisocial loner. you'd definitely want friends to study with and all that.
5) the arc is fun... so are parties =)
um yea.. haha. i'll be glad to answer ur questions if u have any.

How would you evaluate your stay at UCD?
Since I struggle in writing, I'm afraid I'll do poorly in most of my classes... If I don't do well on the Subject A test (I believe it's not called this anymore, but I've forgotten the new name for it) that I have to take a no credit English course in the first quarter or semester, right?
Lyline
May 12 2006, 05:57 PM
^ lol yea i didn't pass the subject A so i had to take workload. my instuctor was an a**. she gave everyone C,D, or F. but it's all good coz it doesn't affect your grade =]
at first i kinda hated it here coz there was nothing to do. but now i like it esp. during breaks where everyone's going home. davis is a quiet and safe town, perfect for students

^ That English class doesn't affect your grade?

Yay ;__;
I can't wait to explore UCD more. Since I'm thinking of not going to summer advising, what classes do you suggest to take in freshman year,
Lyline?
When I applied, I put my major as physics and I'm already getting second thoughts about it. I really would love to learn some new languages while, hopefully changing to and, majoring in cell biology. What's the process of changing your major? All I know is I can change it in Winter 2006. Is there paperwork/letters I have to write?
Lyline
May 12 2006, 08:57 PM
workload classes dont affect you grade. they're like classes to prepare you for the actual english/math/chem classes =]
changing your major is easy...lol...trust me. i've changed my major three times already xD. just go to your current advisor and have him/her signed a paper then give it to your new advisor. once the new advisor's signed it, you're in.
i'd recommend you take MAT21A, ENL1/3 (if you pass the subject A), CHE2A and either a GE class or language class. but language classes are a lot of work though. classes meet 5 days a week and tons of hw and quizzes.

Last, what's the arc?
I'm currently a first year and a Design major.
Changing majors isn't hard. Bascially just get the major change form, get advisors to sign it in turn it in. But when my friend tried to change to design major, they didn't let him because he didn't take any design classes yet, plus they check your grades. I don't know if it's the same with other majors but yea, take a lower division class of the major you want to get into just in case.
You can always double major, triple major (if u're a super good student) or minor in something too.
Sometimes it's pretty hard trying to balance out your time, especially i procrastinate a lot so don't be like me. There's this very sad little club at Davis which is a block away from me but i haven't gone yet. On weekends I prefer to go to parties to have fun.
And lastly the arc is the gym. there's a workout room, lots of workout machines everywhere, courts of badminton, volleyball, basketball, plus rockclimbing. There's also study rooms at the arc.
