Verbeek Named New Soccer Coach
Monday, June 26, 2006 15:25:29
The Korea Football Association has promoted assistant soccer coach Pim Verbeek to head coach of the national team.
The association on Monday announced that it hired the 50-year-old Dutchman, who had served the team in the 2002 and this year's World Cups.
Verbeek has previously coached Netherlands Antilles and was an assistant to outgoing South Korea coach Richard Advocaat at the United Arab Emirates and the German pro team Borussia Mönchengladbach.
His first task is to prepare South Korea for next year's Asia Cup. South Korea plays its second qualifier against Taiwan on August 16th.
Advocaat will hold a news conference Tuesday morning before leaving the country in the afternoon. Reports say he will take over the Russian pro team Zenit St. Petersburg.

they can, they just choose not to. Eriksson (england) is coaching his second right now.

Not alot of English fans liked Eriksson... until they got into the final 16 and now they're in the quarterfinals.

I expected he would go

Sad case. Will the players bear to part with him?

But I guess they are used to these kinds of partings eh?

Advocaat is a pretty good coach. It's just that alot of Korean fans are relentless to the coaches if they don't do well. lol
Unlike Hiddink, Advocaat didn't have as much time to "bond" with the team. So I don't really blame him. Well I do a little. But it's not really his fault. It was the referee's.

I say bring back Hiddink. Lure him from Russia with a big fat contract!

And not surprised Advocaat's leaving.
(But I want Hiddink back XD)
Let's just hope Verbeek can help inspire the team. (:

Advocaat is now coaching at FC Zenit St. Petersburg in the Russian Premier League. Even before the WC started, it was rumored that he was going to be headed there to coach.
Pim should do a fine job. he has head coach experience in the netherlands and japan. he knows the players and what they can and can't do...and he knows how the KFA works, so he knows what will be allowed and not allowed.

at fist i didn't think advocaat was a good enough coach... but i've seen clips on naver where the team and the staff were practicing... they were having so much fun with each other and advocaat would joke around with them and stuff
haha some of the netizens in korea are like "advocaat is so cute" (but not as in physical appearance) because he knows when to loosen up a bit and be silly with the korean team.

lol ... I saw on Korean TV that he used to be a hair transplant model or some hair model for balding people. xD
I think sometimes he got to close with the team but nonetheless the closeness helped most of the time.

well ... Korea hasnt won the Asian Cup since 1960 so you really can't have your hopes up so high.
Korea's actually won it only two times while Iran/Saudia Arabia/Japan have all won it three times.
I guess Korea is good during crunch time - qualifying for the World Cup.

Well, since the World Cup is over...seems that most of the KNT fans have left the sports forum (guess we'll be seeing them in another 4 years)....
anyways,
Korea defeated Taiwan 3-0 in their 2nd Asian Cup qualifying match. The win places Korea atop their group with 6 points. On Sept. 2nd, they will play Iran in their toughest match of the qualifiers. Ahn-jung-hwan (who is playing in his last Asian cup), scored first...followed by Jung Jo-gook and Kim Do-hyeon.

I know in the qualifying round teams were ranked by their '04 AC performance, but how are the final 16 teams seeded? I'm assuming the 4 host nations are put into different groups...are the other 12 teams seeded based on past AC results too?

from the Asian Cup site:
QUOTE
FINAL ROUNDS
Sixteen teams will qualify for the final rounds – the six winners and runners-up of the qualifying round groups, and the host associations Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The tournament from July 7 to 29, 2007 will be split into two stages with a round-robin group stage and a knockout stage.
GROUP STAGE
The 16 finalists will be seeded and divided into four groups of four teams each during the final round draw. Each team plays each of the other teams in the same group according to a league system (three points for a win, one point for a draw, no points for a defeat). The winners and runners-up in each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
