All time favorite Thai singer
Sirasak Ittipolpanish
He sang for the OST of Roy Leh Sanae Rai and Leud Kattiya. OMG, his voice is so awesome, I could just melt.
But then again, he's kind of old compared to these newer people, like Golf-Mike.

I think Buddha Bless are quite interesting relatively speaking. Thai music does lack originality. Some of the pop and pop rock is passable though. As yet there hasn't been any soul (at all), pop RnB or hip-hop that isn't laughably derivative. I'd rather listen to Loso than most of the new artists who come and go.
One thing, surely 'Clash' is a lawsuit waiting to happen, but I suppose the reach of the band is so limited as to not bother anybody?
I also heard there's a Thai artist called 'Prince'. Um... is he living under a rock? There is and always will be only one Prince. How did they let him call himself that??? Again though, not well-known enough to bother anybody?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1XaX7xGhy0 I think Thai music does lack originality, yes. Don't get me wrong, I love Thailand and I really like some of the music here, but just as in other areas of culture and the arts Thailand is currently struggling to find its own sound in music. I've always dug the old stuff from maybe 40 or 50 years ago and some of the uptempo country music as it is unmistakably Thai. I can never remember the names of the singers (usually female) but some of the old songs are hauntingly beautiful. Now, I don't know the average age on this thread (I'm 26) but you would probably laugh at the stuff I'm talking about, but as a foreigner with a keen taste in jazz, soul and funk music there's no way I can keep a straight face when it comes to an 'artist' like Chin. The older stuff has a quality that can speak to your soul. Some of the new artists haven't an ounce of soul in their whole bodies (Chin, Lydia included). Now, I know in the US and UK this often rings true also when it comes to the top 10 charts, but you never have to go far to find a Van Hunt, Common, D'Angelo or Cody Chesnutt. Thailand hasn't one artist that's even close to any of these aforementioned. I just feel like Thai music has lost its identity as it struggles to copy wholesale the US and UK music scene and unfortunately ends up producing a far inferior version of it. I think Thai music is at its best when it's not trying so hard.
Consider an Asian artist from another country, say the Japanese singer Utada Hikaru. Now here's a j-'pop' artist whose Japanese stuff is unmistakably Japanese. It's not all just pop either by a long shot. She's hard to categorise, yet she's very popular while still managing to be really very eclectic and full of music depth. Still Japanese music, no doubt, but mixes in so many other reference points, achieves popularity, but maintains her own musical quirks. That I find impressive. Unfortunately I just don't see to many Thai artists who have that well-rounded balance of cultural identity, artistic integrity and forceful personality. There's not enough charisma and far too few interesting musical ideas. If much of US and UK pop, pop-rock and mainstream RnB is all just 'by numbers' at the moment (and for a good 10 years now) then Thailand as I see it is just producing an even more bland knock-off of that. I want to hear more of the Thai in Thai music or why would there ever be any point in listening to the soulless croonings of Chin when there's D'Angelo, Van Hunt, Cody Chesnutt, Bilal, Rahsaan Patterson, Anthony Hamilton etc. etc. let alone all the 'greats' of the genre from the past 40 years? More Thailand in Thai music, please. There's so much culture, so much that is beautiful and interesting, that it's really just selling yourself short to copy another 'sound' and not do it particularly well.
Sorry for the epic post.
