Off the top of my head, try Hollow January. They're more screamo but they're amazing. There are a lot more emo bands but I have trouble remembering who's emo and who isn't. Popstore has gone emo I know. I think the Strikers are emo too.

Why wouldn't there be emo? It became so trendy in the US it had to make it here.

In order to become mainstream in Korea you have to be willing to sleep with a producer. I'm not sure if any of the emo bands here have that in them.

As I heard, Hollow Jan full length album will be released at December.
Personally, I'm very hyped about their music, because their live was really crazy screaming thing.
And personally, I recommend Bloody Cookie single - mini album very highly. I'd copy & paste description about their music from my store site.
-----------------------------------------------------
Bloody Cookie is 4 women band, who is playing mixture of Gothic Metal - Grunge - Nu Metal influence.
2nd. Mini single is somewhat different from 1st. single. More melodic, little bit less dim & dark. But it doesn't mean their music is another TV rock style. They are still walking in the line between Dark & Heavy - Mellow & Light, and it makes their music very special & unique. Their 2nd. work is another good successful job, walk in the middle of Heavy & LIght. And guitar riffs are more embossed, sometimes old school Metal Style, and it could appeal to even Pure Metal Fans. You might not find similar style to Bloody Cookie very easily, not only for Korean Rock but also for Western market.
Purchase :

Christ, I don't see what all the surprise is about. Emo is one of the more commercially successful subgenres of punk, so you'd expect they'd have at least a bit. Of course it's a lot younger than the streetpunk and the youth crew hardcore, but the emo bands are getting a lot of attention.
And don't worry, they don't act all pretentiously insincere like foreign emo bands.

Jan 26 2007, 01:23 AM
actually, korean emo is more popular than you'd think it'd be. the underground scene in korea (for rap and punk/rock music)...more people listen to it then you'd expect. a lot of the hong dae clubs are packed with people just "chilling out" and listening to underground music. also, there are lots of "clubs" (동아리) in university where people get together and make a group (a lot of the cases i've heard are hard metal bands...)

Does anyone know where I can find samples of the bands songs? (that isn't youtube)~
I like Microkid, and I do believe they're indie. I'd mostly describe them as something like loveholic, though, minus the semi-dance tracks that loveholic has. What makes them similar are the female vocals and the guitars.

there are a lot of melodic fat/epitaph style Korean punk music out there. if you consider that emo too, i can suggest some bands for you.
'Ultra Condition' is emo.
'I Love J.H.' is kind of emo pop-punk.
oh yeah, and "Fake of Reality" is emo as well.

^ well, if we're using 'emo' in a general - thus vague - sense, there is a tremendous number of emo bands in Korea. if we're talking about emo punk, that narrows it down. take away the fat/epitaph Korean bands - like Skrew Attack or Benzene - and that really narrows it down considerably (meaning, there aren't that many emo bands in Korea)
Edit: just remembered, 'Emoticon' is emo too

The definition of emo has changed over time. It used to be an angsty style of hardcore, and now it's used to label any music that has emotion in it. In a few years, emo nerds will start claiming that Frank Sinatra was an emo singer because some of his songs are sad.

i just listened to Popstore's new EP. It came out this year. I actually enjoyed it. SOS should not be the first and last stop. Definitely, check out Popstore too. They have like a skate-pop style of punk on the new EP.

Honestly I have yet to listen to an alternative korean band that has a unique sound at all (obviously apart from the ones that became more popular) Often acting a lot like their kpop counter parts: just mimicking something else.
I'm still looking around on naver for all those groups that have clubs and cyworld groups (Sometimes the only way I feel I can ever really find them apart from actually being IN Korea).
I have heard a lot of bad cover bands. By bad I mean they don't get it. They care more about the look than the music. So what it is... is that a bunch of good musicians (can play an instrument well) try to rock the look and sound.
Sadly all they do is end up rocking the look... and in a bad way.
